Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. I'IUBBARD,

. citizen of the United States, and resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a knock-down table, and the object of the invention is to provide supporting legs which can be easily and quickly detached from the top and folded, and when the table is set up will present a single central support, pedestahshaped, substantially, and offer no obstruction to a person seated at the table.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective view of a table embodying my in vention, Fig. 2 is a bottom view, taken on a section line below the clamps which secure the legs together, Fig. 8 is a sectional view through the table, showing the manner of securing the legs to the table top, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line ma' of Fig. 5, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the clamping device for securing the legs together, Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line g -Q of Fig. 3, Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the legs removed from the top and folded, ready for shipping or storing.

In the drawing, 2 represents a table top, preferably circular in form and composed of any suitable material that is sufliciently light to adapt it for this purpose. The top, as shown in Fig. 1, may consist of two plates arranged one upon another, covered by a suitable inexpensive fabric 2 and having its edges secured by the encircling hoop 2". The underside of the table top is provided with radially extending, strengthening bars 3, each having a groove or recess 4: extending longitudinally therein and adapted to re receive the upper horizontal portion 5 of aleg 6. There are preferably three of these legs, made preferably of tubing of suitable size and bent to a substantially U-shaped form, the upper end fitting within the groove, as stated, and secured therein by suitable means, such as the clamping clip 7 having screws 8 for securing it to the sides Specification of Letters Patent.

of the brace bar. One end of the clip is preferably provided with a slot 7 to receive the shank of the screw, and the clip may be swung on the shank of the other screw as a pivot back and forth across the slot in which the leg is inserted. When the table has been set up, the screw fitting within the slot in the clip 7 may be tightened, if desired, thereby firmly clamping the leg.

The lower end of each leg projects outwardly and is provided with a foot 9, preferably in the form of a ball, the legs of the three feet radiating in'opposite directions and forming a substantial base or support for the table. The middle portions of the legs are secured together by a means which forms an important feature of my invention, consisting of a central block 10, having curved seats 11 formed therein to receive the vertical portions of the legs. Clamping plates 12 have end portions fitting the surfaces of the legs and bolts 13 pass through these plates and are tapped into the block 10 and when tightened, the plates are securely clamped again the legs, holding them firmly on their seats in the block 10 and allowing them to be rotated in the bearing and folded against one another, as shown in Fig. 7, when the table is knocked down for packing or shipping.

When the legs have been set up and clamped together, it will not be necessary to disturb the bolts 13, it being only necessary to release the clamping plates 7 to allow the table to be taken apart, and in setting it up, the legs are swung in their bearings to their desired relative position, the upper ends inserted into the sockets and secured and the table is then ready for use.

The legs 6 are preferably provided at their middle portions with an annular groove 14 to receive a rib 15 on the block 10, thereby preventing longitudinal movement of the legs in the block, but allowing them to be rotated in folding or unfolding. The table top may, of course, be made of any suitable material and any desired shape and size, generally, however, circular in form.

In various ways the details of construction may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination, with a table top, of a plurality of legs having outwarly turned upper ends seated against the underside of said top and secured thereto and also having outwardly turned lower ends forming feet, a seat interposed between the middle portions of said legs, means for clamping said legs on said seat, said clamping means permitting rotation of said legs for folding them upon one another when detached from said top.

2. The combination, with a table top, of a plurality of legs secured at their upper ends to the underside of said top and having outwardly turned lower ends forming feet, means for clamping the middle portions of said legs together, said means including a block having seats for said legs and plates for clamping said legs on said block and forming therewith bearings wherein said legs may be rotated and folded upon one another.

3. In a table, a plurality of legs, U-shaped, substantially, in form, a triangular block having bearings for the middle portions of said legs and fitting between them, plates fitting the outer portions of said legs opposite the faces of said block, and means for clamping said plates to said block.

4. The combination, with the table legs, tubular in form, of-a block fitting between said legs, and having seats therefor, plates fitting against the outer faces of said legs,
