I NAPPIN END GATE FOR WAGONS. No. 544
Patented Aug. 20, 18 95.
NlTED, STATES PAT NT FFIcE.
IRA NAPPIN, OF FARMING'DON, ILLINOIS.
END=GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 544,822, dated August 20, 189 5. Application filed June '7, 1895. Serial No. 551,989. (No model.)
To (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRA NAPPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improveme'nts in End-Gatesg and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wagon-end-gate fasteners, andespecially to an improved hinge and fastener used in combination with a sectional gate wherein the hinge-sections form strengthening cleats for the adjacent edges of the sections and the provision of a handle secured to aportion of the locking portion of the gate. I
A further part of the invention resides in the lever, which forms a double function of serving to hold one of the hinge-sections to the gate and its forward L-shaped end being utilized as a locking-lever to engage in a loop of the handle-carryin g member on the outside of the sectional gate, the handle-carrying section being secured to one section'and the looking-lever to the other, so that when the sec tions of the gate are held in the same plane the lever is designed to be turned at right angles over a portion of the handle-carrying section, and thus securely lock the gate sections together.
The invention consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully decribed, and then specifically defined in the appended claim. I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which-=- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sectional gate detached from a wagon, showing section partially open in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the reverse side,
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates two complemental sections of an end-gate for a wagon, and each section is equipped with the hinges B and C, having each the cleat-forming pore tions D, which are bolted to the adjacent edges of the sections, and E E are the hinged shoulders where suitable pins hold the two sections together. On the reverse side of one of the sections is bolted the handle-carrying memberG, to which is securely held the handle 7 H. The free looped end K of said member overlaps the second section of the end-gate, and L is a locking-lever, which is crankshaped, the crank-shaped end, when held in-a position at right angles to the height of the gate and turned to its innermost throw, will, when the sections of the gate are closed, pass through the looped end K and may be turned at right angles to the looped end and securely lock the sections in the same plane. The said crank-shaped lever serves also as a bolt to hold one of the hinge-sections to the gate-section, andis adapted to have a swiveled movement.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the hinge'sections serve as cleats to strengthen the adjacent edges of the gate-sections, and the locking-lever performs adouble function, thus making a substantial and simple lock and hinge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is In an end gate for wagons the combination of the gate sections A, A, the hinges B and 0 each provided with the cleat portions D, D, substantially as wide as the said gate sections and pivoted together at their ends and at their middle portions, of the lever L having its head securing one of the said hinged portions to a gate section, the free end of said lever ben't into a crank which is adapted to be locked into the hook K of the handle carrying member when the gate sections are closed, sub stantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRA NAPPIN. Witnesses: I
G. M. HOLLAND, HUGH GAINSEY.
