END-GATE FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented no). 14,1916.
Application filed April d, 1916. Serial No. 88,839.
2" '0 all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Louis Boon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Horn, in the county of Benton, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
llll
This invention. relates to an end gate fastoner.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a fastener by means of which an end gate may be securely locked into position on a wagon body.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that the end gate may be either locked in an open or closed position.
A. still further objectof the invention re sides in so constructing the device that it may be easily applied. and operated.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended. claims.
In the drawing; Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a portion of a wagon showing myinvention applied thereto, the end gate being locked in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the relative positions of the parts when the end gate is unlocked but closed; Fig. 3 is horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a fragmental detail.
In the drawing I have illustrated a wagon body which includes sides 1 and a bottom 2. At the rear end of each of the sides cleats 3 and i are mounted, which cleats are spaced apart and between which a slot 5 is provided.
Each of the cleats 4: is provided with a stop 6 for a purpose which will later appear. Rotatably mounted in bearing members 7 on the sides l'is a rod 8 to which an end gate 9 is secured, the inward or downward movement of which gate is limited by its-contacting with the stop members 6. In order that this end gate may be locked in its lowered or closed position, I have provided a pair of slides 10 which are mounted in suitable guides 11 on the outer face of the end gate. These slides are adapted to extend into the slots 5 between the cleats 3 and l to the. rear of the end gate so that the movement of the end gate in its upward direction is prevented. The sliding movementof these slides 10 away from the slots 5 is limited by the contacting of stops 12, formed on the slides, with the guides 11.
In order that the slides 10 may be retracted from the slots 5, I have secured a bracket 13 to the end gate, which bracket supports a pivot pin 1.4. A lever is pivoted, between its ends, on this pivot pin 14 and pivoted to the lever at each side of its pivot point is a link 16, which links extend and are pivoted to the slides 10. It will thus be obvious that when the lever 15 is moved about its pivot to extend in angular relation to the links 16 that the slides 10 will be withdrawn from the slots 5 and when the lever is moved into alinement with the links 16 the slides will be mov d into the slots to lock the end gate.
In order that-the movement of the lever 15 may be arrested when it is in alinement with the links 16, I have provided oneof the links with a notch 17 in,which a handle 18 on the lever 15 seats and which handle is secured within the notch by a latch 19 which engages thereover. Now it will be seen that when the end gate is raised to a horizontal position and the slides 10 are forced away from each other by means of the lever 15, that the stops 12 will engage the rearmost faces of the cleats 3 so that the end gate will be maintained in its raised or horizontal position.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:-
l. The combination with a wagon body having a pair of spaced cleats on each side thereof, of a pivoted end gate hinged between the sides of the body and locking slides mounted on the end gate and arranged to extend between the cleats to maintain the gate in a vertical position and to engage the rear faces of the cleats to maintain the gate in a horizontal position.
2. The combination with a wagon body having a pair of spaced cleats on each side thereofl of a pivoted end gate hinged between the sides of the body, locking slides mounted on the end gate and arranged to extend between the cleats to maintain the gate in a vertical position and to engage the rear faces of the cleats to maintain the gate in a horizontal position and means for looking said slides in both of said positions.
3. The combination with a wagon body, of end gate cleats secured to the sides thereof, a pivoted end gate, a pair of slides on the end gate having stops thereon guidesfor the slides againstwhich the stops are arranged to abut to limit the movement of the slidesvin-one direction, the stops being arranged to abut against the rear faces of the cleats to maintain the gate in horizontal position and means for moving the slides.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
