SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,819, dated July 16, 1895. Application filed August 4, 1894;. Serial No. 519,474. (No modeL) To aZZ whom may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON T. BINKERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps,-of which A the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in saw-clamps; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a' simple and cheap clamp that can be folded so as to occupy but a minimum space, and which tion will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specificatiomand in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the saw-clamp in position for use.. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation with portions broken away.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of the clamp, to which is pivotally secured, as
at a, the barB, theends of which are extended at right angles to its length, as seen at a, and the ends of these portions are provided with spurs A. The outer face of the upright or part A is provided with a spur A as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the lower end of this upright is shown as provided with a hole a for the passage of a screw or other means which may sometimes be required or desired as additional means of fastening, or where it is desired to secure the clamp permanently in one position. When it is desired to fasten the clamp to a bench, board, or any other I support, all that it is necessary to do is to force the spurs A into the wood or support and then press the upright'against the support and its spur A into the same. This willfasten the clamp in position sufficiently firm to enable the operator to file the saw held therein.
The upright A is formed with a lateral oifset A as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, from which extends the arm 0, which is substantially parallel with the upright A, as seen in said Figs. 1 and 2.
To the upper end of the arm 0 is pivotally mounted, as at d, the arm D, to the upper end of which is pivotally connected, as at e, the
clamping-jaw E, between which and the jaw B the saw is designed to be clamped! The other end of this arm D is provided with an elongated slot E in which works a pin F projecting from the elbow of the elbow-lever G, which is pivoted at one end, as at g, to the lateral oifset of the upright A, as shown in Figs.'l and 2.
In use the saw is placed between the jaws and the lever G operated to move it in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, and the jaws are thus brought together, when a still further movement of the lever in the same direction willv lock the jaws in their'closed position. The jaws being pivoted upon independent pivots allows of their being closed so as to lie parallel with the upright, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order to limit their movements beyond the proper point they adjacent edges of the upright and the arm D are provided with the lugs H, as seen best in Fig. 2, against which the jaws are adapted to engage, as shown in Fig. 2, when they reach a point parallel with the upright, the said jaws closing between the said upright and the arm D,as shown.
I is a spring'secured at one end to the in-- ner face of the arm D, as shown at i, and after being coiled around a'stud or pin J on the arm 0 is extended upward to a point near the upper end of the upright A, where it embraces in a series of convolutes 7a a rubber block K, which serves as a sound-deadener, the saw being designed to bear against this block and the spring to take up the vibrations as the file is'moved across the teeth of the saw. The lever G is formed with a cutaway portion or recess 9', as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, to receive the stud on which the end of the spring-arm is attached when the lever is folded, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
\Vhat is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with the upright and the arm pivotally supported therefrom, of the pivoted clamping jaws, mounted to fold parallel with the upright, as set forth.
2. A saw clamp provided with pivoted fold ing clampingjaws, one of which is provided with spurs at right angles to its length, substantially as specified.
3. A saw clamp provided with independently pivoted foldable clamping jaws, provided with bench eitigaging spurs, substantially as specified.
:1:- The combination with the upright, of the clamping jaw pivoted thereon and having lateral extensions provided with spurs, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with the upright provided with a spur, of the clamping jaw pivoted thereon and having lateral portions terminating in spurs, substantially as specified.
6. The combination with the upright and its arm, of the pivoted arm with slot, the pivoted clamping jaws and the elbow lever pivoted at the end of its short arm and having at its bend a pin working in the slot of said arm, substantially as specified.
7. The combination with the upright, the pivoted arm and the clamping jaws pivoted on said upright and arm, of the operating lever havinga recess, and the spring arm carryingasound-deadenersubstantially as specified.
8. A saw clamp comprising an upright, independently pivoted clamping jaws, mounted to fold parallel with said upright, means for actuating one jaw toward and from the other, and a sound deadener substantially as specified.
9. The combination with the upright, the jaws and the pivoted arm, of a spring arm secured at one end, wound between its ends around a stud and at its free end embracing in a series of convolutes a sound deadener, substantially as specified.
