EDWARD T. A. AKASS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
EXTENSION GRILL FRET-WORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 536,593, dated April 2, 1895, Application filed rebruaw 11,1895. seam... 537,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. A. AKAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Grill and Fret Work; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The introduction of grill and fret work for house decoration has been seriously handicapped by the necessity of making the designs to a special measurement in order to fit a particular space. This necessity has precluded the possibility of cheapening the cost by making up the furnishings in large quantities.
The object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable construction such as can be extended or contracted to fit openings of different size thereby enabling the manu-' facturer to produce the goods in large quantities and at correspondingly reduced cost and enabling the local dealer to carry the designs in stock and fill orders more promptly and at cheaper rates thanwould be possible under any system of special orders.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accom-' panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a window having inside shutters and furnished with extension grill and fret work in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a detail in longitudinal section and a view in transverse section respectively, of end frames shown in Fig. 1 and illustrates the method of fastening the grill rods to the supporting bracket and of slotting the bracket to allow the sliding adjustment of the end frame. Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation of a modified construction in which the adjustment is made at the ends of the design instead of its middle portion. The lower rail of the frame is sectioned to show the construction of the sliding rods. Fig. 4 is a detail in enlarged scale showing the manner of making the slide fast to the rail. Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective showing the two part construction of the rail whereby the opening for the slide rod is more conveniently produced by channeling each section than could be done by boring.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In Fig. 1, A represents the window casing of usual construction and B a rail or bar securely fastened to each of the side casings but preferably in such manner that they can be removed when so desired.
0 are what I will designate as grill rods. They are in parallel series of two each and have their inner ends secured to the bar B.
D represents fret work of any desired design but having a solid frame or border, especially on its upper and lower edges D.
These rails D will be provided with longi tudinal openingsinto which the outer ends of the grill rods 0 will be projected in the manner as clearly shown in the drawings and it is designed that the distance of the fret work D from the rail B may be regulated by sliding the partD in or outon the said grill rods. The set screws (1 enable the parts to be locked together at any desired adjustment.
E is a' bracket which is fastened to the rail B and to which the outer end of the lower grill rod is fastened in the manner shown in the two details in Fig. 2, wherein the band E is passed around the grill and an integral threaded extension 6 is passed through the adjacent portion of the bracket and bolted. The grill will preferably have a depressed portion formed to receive the band. A longitudinal slot communicating with the grill opening in the rail allows the rail to slide freely past the fastening device, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
G are grills having perforated end blocks g whereby the grills are strung upon the rods 0. The body portions of the grills may be of any suitable design. It will be my purpose to make the fit between the grills and their rods so close that the former will retain their position without fastening them to the rods but if it should be found necessary they may be secured in a positive manner by drivinga brad or passing a screw through the block into the rod. The portion H, connecting the end sections D, will be in two parts which are adjustably joined together by means of the grill rods 0 and perforated rails D which forma telescoping construction similar to that described for the ends, and the rods are equipped with the adjustable grills G, similar in construction and application to the grills as previously described.
By the adjustable construction of the several parts as above described, it will be seen that not only can the ends be expanded or contracted to suit the clearance required on account of inside blinds and the like, but the front pattern can be varied in length to suit windows of different widths.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 a continuous middle section of fretwork is employed and adjustable grill rods 0 are applied at each end. The end rail 13 is secured to the casing and has the outer ends of the grill rods permanently secured thereto while the inner ends of the rods are projected into openings in the top and bottom rails D of the fret work. I
The opening in the fret work for the grill rods will preferably be made by planing a half round groove in each of the parts of a two part rail and joining the parts together to form the rail. This will be better understood by reference to Fig. 5 which shows the grooved parts ready to be put together. This drinciple of construction can be applied to advantage in the manufacture of ornamental screens and many other purposes aside from those hereinbefore mentioned and it is not therefore desired to limit the invention to the manufacture of inside fihish for houses, but
What I do claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In decorative grill and fret work, the combination with a body portion in twoor more separable sections having longitudinal openings therein, of rods arranged in parallel series and adapted to be projected into the openings in the body portion whereby the sections of the body will be adjustably joined together, means such as a set screw, for securing the rods to the body portion, and ornamental grills substantially as described, adj ustably secured to the rods whereby the rods will be braced and strengthened and whereby the ornamentation will be carried out in the spaces between the sections of the body portion.
2. An extension fretwork consisting of two or more separate sections joined together by a plurality of parallel rods which slide into openings in said sections, said rods being braced and strengthened between the sections by transverse adjustable and ornamental grills, substantially as described and specified.
3. In a Window decoration the combination with the window casing the rails 13 brackets E and rods 0 of the ends D having openings to receive the rods 0 and sliding thereon, the sections I-I secured to the ends D and adjustably connected by the rods 0 and the ad justable grills connecting the front and the end rods substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD T. A. AKASS.
