oooR OR wmoow TRIMMING.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,] 18, dated January 5, 1904.
Application filed August lZ, 1903. Serial No. 1 (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK G. WALBRIDGE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Door or Window Trimming, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trimmings for doors, windows, and the like, especially to the outer facing ofthe door or window casing or frame, and has for its object to provide a device of this character of simple construction and neat appearance which will be strong and durable and one in which there will be a decided saving of material.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a face view of the end or miter joint of my improved trimming. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. the line 4 4 and 5 5.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the outer frame of the trimming, said frame being composed of end bars 2 and side bars 3, a portion of one of each of which is shown herein. The bar 2 is provided upon its inner face, adjacent to its outer edge, with a longitudinal groove or mortise 4, which receives a tongue 5, formed upon the upper edge of the end member 6 of the outer molding or facing 7 of my improved trimming. The side bar 3 is provided with a similar longitudinal groove or mortise 8, receiving a tongue 9 on the outer edge of the side member 10 of the facing or molding. The end and side members of the facing and its surrounding frame are united or assembled by a miter-joint 11.
The bars 2 and 3 of the outer frame 1, as seen in Fig. 3, are from the outer edge a to the inner edge I) of a transverse width equal to the desired depth or thickness of the trimming, and the facing or molding is arranged at an inward inclination from the plane of the edge (1 toward the plane of the edge b, thus producing, in conjunction with the inner side face of the frame 1, a recess 11 in which is seated a strengthening frame or fill- Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views on I ing comprising an end bar 12 and side bar 13,
attached, respectively, to the end and side members of the molding, said frame or filling being disposed to bear at its outer edge or periphery upon the inner side face of the frame 1.
The frame or filling, the composite bars of which unite at their meeting ends by a miterjoint, carries at each corner, one of which is shown herein, a strengthening tongue or member 14, designed to bear upon the inner side of the facing or molding 7 directly over the miter-joint 11. This member 14:, which is composed of wood or other suitable material, has its outer end seated in a mortise 15, formed at the point of juncture of the bars 12 13, and its inner end extending into a socket 16, formed in the rear face of the members 6 and 10 of the molding at their point of juncture. Disposed transversely of the joint 11 for strengthening the same and firmly uniting the parts of the trimming is a series of staples or equivalent fastening devices 17.
In practice the trimming constructed as herein described is applied as a facing around the door-casing, being secured in place in the usual or any desired manner.
It is apparent that from this construction alight and at the same time an exceedingly durable trimming is produced, the end joints of which will be particularly strong, and that by the construction as herein set forth any desired depth or thickness oftrim may be produced by varying the transverse width of the frame- bars 2 and 3 between the points a b and arranging the facing or molding 7 at the proper inclination thereto, thus insuring a decided saving of material over the old-style trims, in which the material from which the molding 7 was produced had to be of a thickness equal to the desired thickness of the trim. I now believe the construction as above described to be the best adapted for the attainment of the ends in view; but it is to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself, except as hereinafter claimed, to the precise details herein disclosed, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a frame composed of end and side bars, of a facing or molding associated therewith and composed of end and side members forming a joint, said facing being provided with a recess, a frame or filling disposed in the recess, and a tongue or member carried by the filling and attached to the facing overlapping the joint.
2. The combination with a frame composed of end and side bars, of a facing or molding associated therewith and composed of end and side members forming a joint, said facing being provided with a rear recess and a socket, a frame or filling disposed in the recess, and a tongue or member carried by the filling and overlapping the joint, the end of the tongue being engaged with the socket.
3. The combination with a frame, of a facing or molding associated therewith, said facing in cross-section being disposed at an inward inclination from the plane of the outer edge toward the plane of the inner edge of the frame, and the frame-bars beingof a transverse width equal to the desired depth or thickness of the trimming.
4. The combination with a frame, of a facing or moldinghavingitsonteredgein tongueand-groove connection with the inner side face of the frame, said facing in cross-section being disposed at an inward inclination from the plane of the outer edge toward the plane of the inner edge of the frame, and the framebars being of a transverse width equal to the desired depth or thickness of the trimming.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK C. WALBRIDGE.
