Description

(N-Modele) J. F. A'I'WOOD1 GARMBNT SUPPORTING CLASP.
Ne. 534x379. A Petemeed Peb. 26, 1895.
,PATENT Error..
JAMES F. ATWOOD, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARMENT-SUPPORTING CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,679, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed January 8, 1895. Serial No. 53412372. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/067%:
Be it known that I, J AMES F. ATWooD,a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporting Clasps, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to garment-supporting clasps of the general style illustrated in the Letters Patent of the United States granted to me January 5, 1886, and numbered 333,495, to which reference is made; and the improvement consists in the below described constru ction, whereby the device is simplified and improved iu action, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a front elevation of my improved clasp in the position assumed when a garment is clamped. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view in the position assumed when the clasp is about to fly open. Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing the clasp open. Fig. 5 is a view of the back plate detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the back plate, consisting of a fiat piece of metal turned up into a lip A at its lower end, and slitted vertically at a at its upper end as shown, the two outer of the three sections thus formed being turned over at a, and the central section a constitutin ga spring, all as in the Letters Patent above referred to.
The folds a provide for a pin B, by means of which the cam-link E is hinged t'o the back plate, and said cam-link is pivotally secured to a front plate D between inwardly turned lips or folds D', by. means of a loop F which extends through said folds D and the front portion of said cam-link as shown. To the upper portion F of this loop the webbing or tab is to be connected, whereby the clasp is suspended. The sides F are bent rearward or curved as shown. r
vExtending outward from the back plate A, beyond the folds a are edges or ledges H, and extending inward or rearward from the upper end of the front plate D, between the folds D', is a lip or spring K. v
When the clasp is closed, the lower end of the front plate D is forced down into the ho1- low formed by the lip A', with the spring a bearing against the rear side of the cam-link, as in the said Letters PatentA It will be noticed c however, that the loop F is connected at the point where the cam-link is pivoted to the front plate, instead of at the point where it pivoted to the rear plate, as inthe said Letters Patent. Y
Vhen the clasp is in use, the portion F of the loop is about over the back plate, the portions F being bent rearward and touching lightly or nearly touching the edges H.
When the clasp is to be opened, the loop is forced back, the edges or wings H H acting as fulcrums for the side portions F of the loop, which act as levers. As the loop is forced back, it assumes the position shown in Fig. 3, and then the lower end of the front plate D flies up from the lip A into the position shown in Fig. 4, the springs a. and K assisting. YThus no tab, such as shown at C in said patent is needed.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a garment-supporting clasp, the corn` bination of theback plate A formed with the lip A at its lower end and provided with the outward extensions H on its upper edge, the cam-link B pivotally connected with the back plate, the front plate D pivotally connected at its upper edge with the cam link, and the loop F F F extending from the point of connection between the cam-link and front plate and adapted to have its side arms act as levers upon the said extensions in opening the clasp, substantially as set forth.
2. In a garment-supporting clasp, the combination of the back plate A formed into the lip A at its lower edge and provided with the outward extensions H on its upper edge and the spring a', the front plate D provided with the spring or lip K, the cam-link E'connecting said front and back plates and pivoted thereto, and the loop F F F secured to the clasp at the hinged connection of the cam-link with the front plate and bent rearward'as shown, substantially as described.
