UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. ADAMS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,689, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed August 9, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itrknown that I, GEORGE E. ADAMS, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates more especially to improvements in cast-0d devices for garwent-supporters.
The object of the invention is to producea cast-01f device adapted to be secured to a webbing and through which a portion of the attaching-loop may readily slide with the constant changes in position of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide an ornamental form of cast-off device which will be durable in construction and simple and convenient in operation.
The invention consists in the peculiar features of construction embodied in the combined slide and cast-off, together with other novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
,Figure 1 represents a front View of the improved cast-off, showing the buttonhole-loop of a suspender held in the cast-off slide. Fig. 2 represents a view of the cast-off slide in the open position. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged vertical sectional view of the same.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a transverse link, generally of wire, through which the suspending webbing is passed, the lower bar of this link being bent slightly outward at its central portion to form a pivot 6, the inward bends of the wire at each end of the pivot to join the same to the main portion of the link forming shoulders which prevent the side movement of the cast-off.
The support or slide 7 is secured to the pivot 6 by means of the ears 8 8, which are bent around the same, and has a depending plate 9, the lower portion thereof forming a concavity 10, curving downward at the ends, while the extreme lower end is turned upward to form the guard-tongue 11. At the point of juncture between the concavity 10 and the lip 11 the metal is pressed sharply inward to form a catch 12. The front or Serial No. 442,555. (No model.)
locking member is secured to the pivot 6 by the ear 13, and is free to turn on the pivot. This member has a depending plate let, suitably ornamented, the lower portion being concaved to fit snugly over the guard-tongue 11 and having a lip 15, adapted to engage the catch 12, and a thumb-piece 16 for opening the cast-0E.
When this device is used as a suspender, the buttonhole-loop A is supported in the concavity 10 of the plate 9 by the guardtongue 11, and is free to slide therein to adjust itself to the changing positions of the wearer. To secure the buttonhole-loop against accidental displacement when the wearer is sitting, thelocking memberis turned down and the lip 15 engaged with the catch 12, securely holding the two plates together. These, however, may be readily separated by lifting the front member by the lip 16. The downward pull being entirely on the back plate, this device is more secure than when a separate spring-catch is used.
Having thus described. my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cast-off for garment-supporters, in combination, two oppositely-pivoted members having oppositely-arranged concavities to receive a cord or its equivalent and a latch for positively locking the members together, as described.
2. In a cast-off for garment-supporters, the combination, with a depending plate having a downwardly-curved transverse concavii y and a guard-tongue curving upward from the edge thereof, of an oppositely-curved locking member adapted to fit over the guard-tongue, as described.
3. The combination, with the plate 9, having the concavity 10, the guard-tongue 11, and a catch 12 and pivoted to the link 5 by the ears 8 8, of the locking member It, also pivoted to said link and having a lower concavity adapted to cover said guard-tongue, a lip 15 for engaging the catch 12, and a thumb-piece 16, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE E. ADAMS.
