HEMSTITCHING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING=MACHENESI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,418, dated November 20, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL SCHOEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of WVarren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HemstitchingAttachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object to provide a hemstitching attachment, for two-needle sewing machines,which attachment will properly present two strips of fabric, and a piece of goods to which said strips are to be attached, to the stitch-forming devices of the machine in such a manner that the two hemstitch seamsof a double hem-stitch trimming may be simultaneously formed, such double hem-stitch trimming being adapted for use as ruftiing for ladies waists, or as an ornamental edging for skirts, aprons, (lac.

In carrying my invention into efiect I provide a presser foot having two needle-holes, a transverse groove or recess in its bottom, a strip-guiding passage above its bottom and separated therefrom by a suitable thickness of metal at the needle holes, to form the usual loose hem-stitches, and slots extending from said needle holes to said transverse groove or recess in said thickness of metal, and in connection with said presser-foot I employa hemturning uide so arranged as to deliver a turned or folded edge of the goods to one of the needles of the machine beneath the presser-foot, a hem-turning strip guide which will deliver a turned or folded edge of a strip of fabric to the other of the needles of the machine beneath the presser-foot but with the nonturned edge of said strip between the needles, so as to be clear of the needle first referred to, and a second strip guide which will turn or fold one edge of a second or upper strip of fabric and deliver said strip with one edge thus folded into the said strip passage of the presser-foot and to the two needles of the machine in such manner that two rows of loose stitches will be formed in said upper strip, one of said rows of stitches loosely attaching said upper strip to the goods and the other row of stitches loosely securing said upper strip to the first named or under strip.

The work thus performed by my attachment is subsequently finished, to complete the double hem-stitch trimming, by further folding the fabric strips or pieces, by hand or otherwise, and then sewing down these additional folds by three rows of plain stitches.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are top and bottom views, respectively, of my improved attachment. Figs. 3 and 4: are opposite side views of the same. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 55 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to said line. Fig. 6 is a cross section on line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic View to illustrate the work performed with my device. Fig. 8 is a similar View to show the finished work, and Fig. 9 a plan View to illustrate the finished work.

A denotes a sewing machine presser-foot having two needle-holes a, a transverse groove or recess a in its bottom,a strip-guiding passage a above its bottom in front of said groove and opening into the latter, said passage extending on both sides of said needleholes, and slots a in the wall or thickness of metal a. which separates said strip passage from the bottom of the presser-foot, said slots forming stitch-passage openings or communications between said needle-holes and, said grooves.

B is a hem-turning guide constructed to form a single down-turned fold e in the goods or wide fabric strip E and deliver said goods or fabric strip beneath the presser-foot A by reason of the fact that the said guide has an extension or attaching piece I) which extends beneath the toe of said presser-foot. The edge-guiding wall b of said guide Bis in a line between the needle-holes a of the presserfoot so that the fabric E will be stitched only by the left-hand needle passing through a single thickness of said fabric, as denoted by the dotted line h, Fig. 7, which line indicates the position of said left-hand needle-and of the stitches formed thereby relative to the folded fabric E.

O is the lower strip-guide made in the form of a flattened tube partly open on top and having at its right side a hem-turning scroll c which forms a double, down-turned fold or hem f in the fabric strip F, said strip guide IOU extending at its forward end beneath the toe of the presser-foot A so as to deliver the hemturned strip F beneath said presser-foot but above the fabric E and in such position that the non-folded edge of said strip will be to the right or inside of the left hand needle so that the right-hand needle, only, will pass through said strip, and through but a single thickness, as denoted by the dotted line 01, Fig. 7.

Dis the upper strip guide also made in the form of a flattened tube partly open on top and having a hem-turning portion d to form a single up-turned fold gin the strip G, said guide being so arranged as to deliver the said strip into the strip-passage a of the presserfoot, and thus said strip, while being stitched, will be held separated, at the needle-holes a, from the strip F and fabric E, so as to form loose hem-stitch seams, both needles passing through said strip as denoted by the dotted lines h, 2', Fig. 7, the opposite guiding edges of said strip being both outside or to the right and left of the line of the needle holes a. The right hand outer folded edge of the strip G is guided by a small flange a formed on the bottom of the presser-foot A, said flange thus preventing said strip from running to the right, the folded part f of the strip F passing beneath said flange.

To form the finished hem-stitch trimming illustrated by Fig. 9 the fold e is folded back downward over line h onto the material E,

" making a double-fold hem with the raw edge inside. The single thickness of the lower strip F is folded in downward over the line 11 and above the double fold f, and the single thickness of the strip G is folded over upward over the line h and then the single fold g is folded upward over the line 2', and down onto the single fold just referred to, thus leaving the fabrics folded as denoted by Fig. 8 with the folded strip G connected to the material E by loose hem-stitches h and the folded strip F connected to the folded strip G by the loose hem-stitches i, and the several folds or hems are then secured by the three rows of stitches, 1, 2 and 3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A double hemstitching attachment for sewing machines consisting of the combination with a presser-foot having two needleholes and having also a strip-guiding passage above its bottom, leaving a wall of metal between the bottom of the foot and said passage with rearwardly opening slots in said wall extending to said needle holes, of a hem-turning fabric-guide constructed and arranged to deliver material, having a down-turned edge, beneath said presser-foot, a strip guide having a hem-turning scroll, to form a double fold in a strip of fabric and also constructed and arranged to deliver the latter beneath said presser foot, and a second. strip guide having a hem-turning edge and a guiding passage communicating or registering with the said strip-guiding passage in the said presser foot, to operate substantially as described.

2. A double hemstitching attachment for sewing machines consisting of the combination with the presser-foot A having the needle holes a, the transverse groove a in its bottom, the strip-guiding passage a above its bottom and the stitch-passage slots a extending from said needle holes to said groove in the wall a between said passage and the bottom of said foot, of the hem-turning workguide 13 and the hem-turning strip-guide O, the latter having the scroll c and both of said guides being arranged to deliver material beneath said presser foot, and the strip-guide D having the hem-turning or folding portion 01, the passage of said guide communicating or registering with the said strip passage a of the presser-foot, to operate substantially as set forth.
