. UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILES BROOKS, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,141, dated October 30, 1894.
- Application filed March 23, 1894:. Serial No. 504%,756- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILES W. BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to puzzles and it has for its object to produce a puzzle constructed of a section of flexible material, such as paper, cardboard or the like, bearing upon its faces portions of letters or figures or both, and said puzzle to be cut or divided and folded by a person so that said sections or portions of letters and figures will form complete letters or figures, whereby any desired combination of words and figures will be produced, the puzzle being solved when the latter effect is attained.
My invention consists in the construction of the puzzle as hereinafter fully describe and illustrated in the drawings.
' In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan view of a section of flexible material which constitutes my puzzle. Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the material as being out into strips and the latter folded to produce a complete word. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the different letters of a word arranged in a horizontal line.
My puzzle to be hereinafter described is designed to alford amusement to persons both.
young and old and also may be adapted as an advertising medium, the word or words produced in solving the puzzle being designed to advertise the quality of any commodity if desired.
In constructing the blank for my puzzle, I
may employ any suitable flexible material formed by cutting out the latter in the req- I isite shapes; and said sections of letters or figures are so arranged that when the strips G are folded properly the sections of letters or figures, at the opposite edges of the blank will meet toform the complete letters or figures.
I would state that no particular lines or folds are to be adhered to, it being a matter of choice with the operator to fold the same in any desired manner whereby he can produce the desired result.
In the drawings I have shown a word as being produced the letters whereof being arranged in an irregular manner, but a word may be produced as seen in Fig. 4 whereby the letters are all in a horizontal line.
In order to increase the difficulty in solving the puzzle I may arrange the sections of letters or figures promiscuously on the blank so that it will be necessary for a person to cross one or more of the strips 0 beneath others of the strips as seen in Fig. 3.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein described puzzle consisting essentially of a single section of fiexiblematerial A, said section being cut from its opposite edges toward the center thereof in the manner described to form the series of parallel strips 0 separate from each other but integral with the body of the section, and said strips being provided with sections of letters or figures at or adjacent to their opposite edges and being adapted to be folded in the manner specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my sig'naturein presence of two witnesses.
MILES W. BRoo'Ks.
