UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN T. LAWTON, OF LONDON, CANADA.
COMBINED SOFA AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,720, dated August 21, 1894.
' Application filed July 8, 1893. Serial No. 479,979- (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. LAWTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Sofa and Bed, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a sofa-bed, or a combined bed and sofa, the object being to construct it in such a manner, and to provide it with certain simple and effective mechanism, which will safely hold it when folded, as a sofa to occupy a small space, and which will when unfolded, provide a commodious bed, all of which will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims. a
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1. is a perspective view of a sofabed, embodying my invention, when folded as a sofa. Fig. 2. is another view of same, when unfolded, to form a bed. Fig. 3. is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the arms, which secures the ends in place. Figs. 4, and 5, are enlarged detail front and side views respectively of the adjustable leg and casting, which supports the back when unfolded to form the bed, and connects the back with the ends when folded to form a sofa.
A, B, designate two frames hinged together at, b, and suitably upholstered; these frames, A, B, when unfolded as shown in Fig. 2. form the main portion of the bed, and when folded as shown in Fig. 1. the frame, A, forms the back, and the frame, B, the seat of the sofa.
C, D, designate two frames, hinged together at, h, and when folded and adjusted as shown in Fig. 1. they form the ends of the sofa, and when unfolded and adjusted, as shown in Fig. 2. they increase the length of, and form a very commodious bed.
E, E, designate sockets or recesses, which may be formed in the frame, B; and F, F, designate sockets or recesses formed in the frames, A, and, B; and these sockets or recesses may be formed in these frames, or they maybe formed in metal or other suitable material, and secured to the frames, A, and, B, as found most suitable or convenient.
G, G, designate arms, one of which is secured to each of the frames, 0, and, D, by screw bolts or other suitable securing devices, I, I, and these arms are provided with legs, H, H, which extend on each side of, or are secured in sockets in the frames, 0, D, for the purpose of taking all strain off the screws, which secure said arms to said frames; and these arms, G, are each provided with a barb, J, which engages with the material adjacent to, or at one side of the socket, E, to anchor said arms, G, in said sockets, E, E, and thereby prevent said arms from being accidentally retracted.
When the frames, 0, D, are folded together, as shown in Fig. l. to form the ends of the sofa, two arms, G, G, are adjusted adjacent to one another, and inserted in a socket, E, this securely holds the ends in place at the front edge of the sofa; and when the frames, 0, D, are unfolded, as shown in Fig. 2. these arms, G, are inserted in the sockets or recesses, F, at each side of the frames, A, and, B, to hold these frames in the position shown in Fig. 2. to increase the length of the bed.
This device when arranged as a sofa, is supported by the stationary legs, K, and when arranged as a bed, it is supported by the adjustable legs, L, and castings, M, in addition to the stationary legs, K.
The adjustable legs, L, are each formed with a foot or knob, e, and with a flange, n, at or near their ends, as shown in Figs. 4, and, 5; and the castings, M, are each formed with a recess, 0, and opening, m, to which the flange, n, of the leg, L, is fitted.
The recesses, O, in the castings, M, permit the flanges, n, to be adjusted therein opposite the opening, an, when in this position, the flange, 'rt, may be adjusted and projected through said opening, as shown in Figs. 2, and 5, so that when the foot or knob, e, rests upon the floor, and the flange, 11, adjusted as described, the frame, A, when adjusted as shown in Fig. 2. will be securely supported in this position.
The flange, n, may extend on one side only, or on two opposite sides of theleg, L, as shown, when formed on both sides of the leg, the frame, A, may be cut away opposite the opening, m, to permit the flange, n, to be adjusted freely. Again, by raising the frame, A, to
7 the position shown in Fig. 1. and adjusting the flanges, it, out of the openings, m, these adjustable bars or legs, L, may be adjusted to, and projected through the sockets or openings, P, in or between the frames, 0, D, and this opening, P, is narrower in one cross section than the other, so that when the flange, n, is adjusted as shown in Fig. 1. the frame, A, is locked in an upright position to the frames, 0, and D, to form the back of the sofa; the knobs, e, preventing the legs, L, from being drawn out of the castings, M.
The sockets or openings, P, and the sockets, E, and, F, may be formed in the material, of which the frames are formed, and metal lined or'n'ot, as desired, or they may be made in metal, or other suitable material, and the latter secured to the frames, as desired.
This combined sofa-bed is arranged for use as a sofa, or as a bed as follows:-When adjusted as shown in Fig. 1. by grasping the knobs, e, or lower ends of the legs, L, the latter may be turned in the castings, M, until the flanges, n, are adjusted at right angles to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1. or in line with the portion of the opening, P, longest in cross section, when in this position, the flanged ends, n, of the legs, L, may be withdrawn from the openings, P, this permits the frame, A, to be lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2. when by drawing the leg, L, through the casting, M, until the flange, n, comes opposite the opening, m, in said casting, said legs, L, may be again turned, to adjust the flange, n, in the opening, m, to firmly support the frame, A, when in a horizontal position.
The frames, 0, and,D, are disengaged from the seat or frame, B, by removing the arms,
G, G, from the sockets, E, E, at each end of the sofa, and the frames, 0, and, D, are then unfolded, this brings an arm, G, at two opposite sides thereof, which arms, G, G, are then inserted in the sockets, F, F, at each side of the bed, to secure said unfolded frames in the position shown in Fig. 2. to extend the bed, and these sockets, F, may be formed on an incline, so that when the arms, G, G, are inserted therein, the upholstered frames will be inclined upward, to form a raised support at the head of the bed, and serve as pillows, as well as to lengthen the bed.
When wishing to arrange the bed for use as a sofa, or to occupy less space, the frames, 0, and, D, are removed, from the frames, A, and, B, by disengaging the arms, G, from the sockets, F, then folding said frames together, and inserting the arms, G, in the sockets, E, as shown in Fig. 1. this secures the ends in place, at or near the front of the seat, B; this permits the raising of the frame, A, to the vertical position shown in Fig. 1. when by grasping the knobs, e, or lower ends of the legs, L, and turning the latter, the flanges, n,
may be adjusted out of the openings, m; the legs, L, are then adjusted lengthwise in the casting, M, and through the opening, 1?, in the frames, 0, and, D, when by adjusting the flanges, n, at right angles to the portion of the openings, P, narrowest in cross section, the back, A, is coupled to the frames, 0, and, D, and securely held in this upright position, and the frames, 0, and, D, at the back 0f the seat, are securely held in place; the weight of the back, A, drawing on the frames, 0, and,
adjustable legs, L, these are simple, strong,
and durable, and at the same time effective means for the purpose; and by suitably upholstering the frames, A, B, O, and, D, a handsome spring back, seat, and ends are provided, which when extended, forms a bed having springs, mattress and pillows combined, and commodious enough for a double bed, the folded ends of the sofa, forming an extension at the head and feet of the sofa, making a comfortable and commodious bed, which may be arranged to form a handsome sofa at a very moderate cost.
While I prefer the hinging of the frames, A, and, B, together at, b, it is evident that thstead of these frames, A, and, B, being hinged together, they may be made separate, and attached to, or detached from one another at, b so that while I prefer the construction of hinging the frames together, and the construction of the arms, G, casting, M, adj ustable leg, L, herein shown, I do not limit myself to the details thereof, as they maybe modified in various ways, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a combined sofa and bed,the frames, A, and, B, the casting, M, and the adjustable bar or leg, L, formed with a knob, e, and with a flange, n, in combination with the frames, 0, and, D, formed with the opening, P, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a combined sofa and bed, the frames, A, and, B, the latter of which, is formed with sockets, E, E; the casting, M, the adjustable bar or leg, L, formed with a knob, e, and flange, n, in combination with the frames, 0, and, D, formed with an opening, P, and the arms, G, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposespecified.
3. In a combined sofa and bed, the frames,
A, and, B, formed with the sockets, F, F, the.
castings, M, formed with the openings, m, and
the adjustable xbars or legs, L, formed with the arms, G, G, formed with the barbs or In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature in fianges,J,and1ngs,H,H,in combination with the presence of the two undersigned witthe frame, A, a frame, B, formed with the sockets, E, E, the casting, M, and adjustable 5 bar, L, formed with the flange, 'n, and knob, e, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
