STEPHEN MCOLELLAND, OF PARIS, TEXAS.
COMBINED CHAIR, COT, AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,343, dated July 31, 1883.
Application filed July 8, 1852. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, STEPHEN MGOLELLAND,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident.
of Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Chair, Got, and Bed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the. annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference markedthereon.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position for use as a cot. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the device as used for a chair, and Figs. 4 and 5 are modifications of the device.
This invention has relation to folding furniture, and especially to folding bedsteads; and 20 it consists in the construction and novel ar rangement of a base box or receptacle, and, pivoted by arms to the sides thereof, adjustable head and foot frames supporting a canvas and capable of being folded together in inclined or upright position to form the back of a chair, of which the top of the basebox forms the seat.
The invention also consists, in connection with the features hereinbefore referred to, of the braces, end supports, fastenings, and attachments, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the base box or receptacle, which is usually provided with casters. In the top of this boX is seated the cushioned cover or lid B, and below said lid is a chamber, 0, in which cushions, pillows, quilts, &c., may be kept. 1
consisting of a transverse board, E, and arms F, extending therefrom to the sides of thebasebox A, to which said arms are pivoted. These arms are preferably slotted, as indicated at g,
to engage clamp-screw pivots h of the base boX. H is the canvas connection or bearing.
Buttons or check-fastenings it serve to hold the arms of the head and foot frames in position after adjustment.
N, are pivoted to theside arms of the head and foot frames, and serve, when said parts are extended in the position to form a bedstead,
Side braces or ties, L, serve to hold the head and footframes, when extended, more firmly together,"and end supports,
to prevent tilting, as the basebox is of comparatively small size, and supports the frame at the central part only.
On the back of either or of each of the frames D is arranged a cushion, P, extending transversely, and serving, when the frame is set in amore upright position-being folded against its fellow frame-to form the back of a chair, the seat of which is formed by the lid B of the base-box. In this position the frames are secured by the buttons or check-fastenings attached to the box.
The canvas bearing which connects the head and foot frames may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, being attached to the trans verse head and foot boards, or connected therestowed therein when the frames are set up to form a chair-back. Theslot-connections of the side arms enable the frames to be raised or lowered to form beds of different heights.
To the side arms of the frames D are connected slides z, which, when the frames are unfolded to form a bedstead, are designed to be raised in. position to support a mosquitocanopy. These slides may be connected by a cord bearing, 1).
' The base-box may be provided with adjustable rockers, if thought desirable.
In'order to strain the canvas, when necessary, it may be provided with a roller at one end, said roller having its bearings in one of the frames D, and being provided with a ratchet on one end to engage a spring-pawl on the frame, and an operating-crank on the other DDrepresent the head and foot frames, eachend.
If desirable, the arms F may be fastened to the base-box, crossing each other, and one bolt passing through both, as shown in Fig. 4, holding them in position; or one of the arms F may be hinged to the other, and only one of them bolted to the base-box, as shown in Fig. 5.
A folding frame and a hammock attached thereto has been used prior to my invention. An invalid-chair having a closed boX or closet, the top piece of which forms the seat of the chair, has been provided with an adjustable back and an adjustable foot-rest, each of which has been cushioned on its upper faces and an invalid-chair has had its adjustable back and adjustable foot-rest provided with supporting- I legs heretofore; and Iclaim neither of these constructions, broadly, herein.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A combined folding bedstead and chair having the middlebase-boX,A, the folding head and foot frames D, pivoted by slotted arms F to the sides of said boX, and the canvas or bearing H, connected to the transverse bars of said frames, and the tightening-roller provided with ratchet and pawl secured to one of said bars, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the base-box A and the check-fastenings k, of the head and foot frames D, having the side arms, F, pivoted ing the cushioned lid B, and the head and foot frames D, having the slotted arms F, pivoted to the sides of said box, and the back cushion or cushions, P, in the outer face of the pivoted slotted arms F, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN MCJLELLAND.
