PIPE-G OUPLING.Y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 522,005, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed February Z7, 1894:. Serial No. 501.644. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BURKE, acitizen of the United States, residingfat Bualo, in the county of Erie and State of New York,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Couplings, of which the following is a specification. n j
This invention relates to couplings which lare more particularly designed for connectlo ing water pipes with the flushing rim of porcelain water-closet bowls. The flushing rim of a Water-closet, as ordinarily constructed, is provided with a laterally projecting horn or nipple of sufficient length to permit a metallic bushing to be secured thereto, and to this bushing the water pipe is coupled in any suitable manner. The horn of the water closet is frequently broken oft' owing principally to the settling of the floor on which the closet is supported, which renders it impossible to again connect the water pipe thereto in the ordinary manner.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive coupling whereby the water pipe can be readily and reliably secured to the bowl in case its horn or nipple is broken off.
In the accompanying-drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section showing a water pipe connected with the bowl of the water closet by my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in line 2--2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section showing the i manner of introducing the attaching hooks 5 5 into the iiush opening of the bowl. FigA is a perspective view of one of the attaching hooks. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section, at right angles to Fig. 1, of the coupling sleeve, the locking sleeve and one of the attaching hooks.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures. g
A represents the bowl of a water closet which is provided at its top with the usual hollow flushing rim B having an inlet or Hush opening b on its outer side and a row of outlet perforations b'.
C represents acoupling sleeve arranged adjacent to the outer side of the Iiushing rim, 5o axially in line with its inlet opening, and
` provided with internal and external screwthreads c c respectively. The coupling sleeve is also provided internally, on diametrically opposite sides, with longitudinal grooves or recesses, d d. 5 E E represent attaching hooks whereby the coupling sleeve is connected with the flushing rim. These hooks engage against the inner edge of the inlet opening b of the iiushing rim, and their Shanks e are arranged partly 6o in said opening andpartly in the recesses of the coupling sleeve. The inner sides of the hook Shanks are arranged flush with the inner side of the coupling sleeve and are provided with sectional screw-threads e of the same size and pitch as the internal screw thread of the coupling sleeve, so that the screw threads of the shanks form continuations of the internal screw threads of said sleeve. 7o
F represents a locking sleeve, whereby the attaching hooks and the coupling sleeve are secured together. This locking sleeve is provided with an external screw thread f which engages with the internal screw-threads of the coupling sleeve and the hooks, thereby holding the hooks and the coupling sleeve against longitudinal movement upon each other. The locking sleeve is provided at its outer end with notches f in which asuitable 8o wrench is inserted for turning the locking sleeve. The latter is provided at its front or inner end, with a plain tapering portion or extension f2 which supports the attaching hooks in an inwardly inclined position, in passing them through the inlet opening of the flushing rim.
G represents a packing ring arranged between the coupling sleeve and the flushing rim, and H is an internally screw-threaded 9o clamping ring arranged upon the external screw-thread of the coupling sleeve and pressing the packing ring against the iiushing rim, for producing a water-tight joint.
I represents the water supply pipebearing with its end against the outer end of the coupling sleeve. This pipe is drawn against the adjacent end of the coupling sleeve by the usual union or connection J.
In assembling the parts, the locking sleeve roo is screwed partly into the coupling sleeve and the screw-threads at the outer or rear ends of the attaching hooks are then engaged with the first thread at the front end of the locking sleeve, as shown in Fig. 3. WVhen thisis done, the attaching hooks cannot become detached from the locking sleeve but can be tipped toward each other on the locking sleeve, sufficiently to permit them to be passed through the inlet openingof the flushing rim in which position they are sustained by the tapered front portion of the locking sleeve, as represented in Fig. 3. After passing the hooks through the inlet opening, the locking sleeve is screwed farther into the coupling sleeve and upon the shanks of the hooks which causes the latter to move outward into the recesses of the coupling sleeve and to` spread Within the flushing riin, so that they extend outwardly beyond the edge of the inlet opening. The packing ring is next pressed against the outer side of the iiushing rim by the clamping ring H, whereby the coupling sleeve is drawn away from the iiushing rim and the attaching hooks are firmly drawn against theinner side of the iiushin g rim, forining aWater-tight joint between the coupling sleeve and the fiushing rim. The Water pipe is finally connected with the coupling sleeve by the union J, in the ordinary manner.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination With the coupling sleeve of the coupling sleeve and the attaching hooks, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the coupling sleeve provided on its inner side with a screw-thread and longitudinal grooves extending through said thread, of attaching hooks having Shanks arranged in said grooves and provided with sectional screw threads which correspond With the internal screw-thread of the coupling sleeve and alocking sleevehaving a tapering front portion, for supporting the attaching hooks in an inclined position, and an externally screw-threaded rear portion which engages with the screw-threads of the coupling sleeve and the attaching hooks, substantially as set forth.
vWitness my hand this 24th day of February, 1894i.
