"Lnwfs s. HAYES, or CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,956, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed February 1. 1394. Serial lie-498,763. (No model.)
To aZ Z whom it, may concern:
Be t known that I, LEWIS S. HAYES, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Cortland,
in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same. Thls invention relates to certain improvements in cabinets fortype-writing machines,
-in which a movable table or shelf for supporting the machine is employed in connection until a movable top or cover, the two opcrating mutually to open the cabinet and raise the table or shelf to the proper position a for the convenient operation of the machine.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a cabinet or desk in which the machine supporting shelf or table may be raised and lowered and held in a horizontal position by a simple and efficient mechanism, without the use of weights or othercounterbalan cing devices, and a further object is to so cheapen the cost of construction that a cabinet or desk of the character described may be furnished the table raised in horizontal position.
Referring to the drawingsz-The numeral lindicates the body or casing of the cabinet or desk of the machine, which isrectangular in shape and of proper dimensions to conveniently inclose the machine and afford effective working room for the operative, when the cabinet or desk is open and the machine in position for use. The front of the chamber of the cabinet,'in.which the movable machine supporting-shelf or table is located, is entirely open as shown in the respective figures. The back of the desk orcabinet is constructed in two parts, the lower part 2 being rigidly fastened to the rear of the side pieces of the said bodyor casing. The upper part 3,0f said back, is movable and is hinged at its lower edgeto the upper edge of the lower portion of the back, in. such manner that it can fall outward or backward for the purpose hereinafter described. 7
the compartment containing the machine sup porting-table or shelf. These shelves 4 and .5 serve to strengthen the cabinet, and hold the sides together, without cross-rods or ties at or nearthe front of the cabinet, whichrods would be in the way of *the knees of the operative and on that account objectionable.
The numeral 6 indicates the top of the cabinet or casing, which is hinged at its rear edge to the upper edge of the hinged portion of the back, before mentioned, as indicated by the numeral 7. The said top is provided, near its front edge, with a depending ledge or abutment 8, against which the forward edge of the supporting-table orshelf, of the cabinet, bears when the cabinet is closed.
The numeral 9 indicates the supporting-table-or shelf, which is situated between the sides of the inclosing compartment of the cabinet, and is provided with a rail or ledge 10, at itsforward edge, which closes against the lower edge of the ledge or abutment 8 before mentioned. Said table or shelf, near its forward edge, on its lower side, and at each side thereof, is provided with dependent lugs or ears 11, which are pivotally supported on theinner sides of the body or casing, nearthe front of the same, as indicated by the numeral 12 in the drawlngs. is provided with an upwardly extending ledge, 13, against which the back of the machine rests when in position. 7
The numeral let indicates two angle levers, each pivoted at its angle to opposite sides of the interior of the body of the casing, as indicated by the'numeral'15. The short, or
lower arms of said levers, are connected to the sides of the movable shelf or table near its rear by means of the links 16, which are pivoted respectively to said short arms of the levers and to the sides of, the table. The long,
or upper arms of said angle levers,- are pivoted to lugs 17 depending from the inner side The rear end of the said shelf or table of the 'top, and the lever, top, swinging portion of the back, and movable table, are of such proportions and are so arranged, relatively, that when the cabinet or desk is closed and the top in horizontal position, the table or shelf will assume an inclined position, closing the cabinet or desk; and when the top is raised and thrown back the table or sh elf will assume a horizontal position, and the top with the swinging portion of the back will assume a vertical position, out of the way of the operative, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The parts being closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the supporting shelf or table, it will be seen, is in an oblique or inclined position, closing at its upper edge against the abutment 8 nearthe forward edge of the top, and resting at its lower or rear edge agai st the shelf 4. To open the cabinet the top is raised at its forward edge (turning on its hinge) and by turning the hinged part of the back backward both the top and said hinged portion of the back will assume a vertical position, resting against the rigid portion of the back of the cabinet. This lllQYBment carries the angle levers into the position shown in Fig. 3, elevating the shelf q suppe 't n e o a ho so ta po tio as shown.
As will be observed in the drawings, the cabinet or desk at one or both sides, may be provided with .the usual drawers for paper, tools, the.
I-iaving thus folly described my invention,
what I claim as-uew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cabinet for type-writing machines, the combination, with the movable top, of the movable machine supporting-shelf and the approximately right angle levers having their long and short arms, connected respectively to the top and shelf, whereby the same are operated simultaneously, substantially as specified.
2. In a cabinet for type writing machines, the combination, with the movable portion of thebaek thereof, of the movable top connected to said movable portion, the movable machine supporting-table and the connecting mechanism, whereby the table is raised to a horizontal position when the top is opened, substantially as specified.
3. a cabinet for type-writing-niachines, the comhination, with the movable portion of the back and the movable top, of the movable machine supporting-shelf and the angle levers having their long and short arms connected, respectively, to the top and shelf, whereby the same are operated simultaneously, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature lll the presence of two witnesses.
