UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
CHARLES N. LEONARD, OF INDIANAPOLIS,-INDIANA.
COMBINED DESK AND TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,233, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed September 18, 1888- Serial No, 285,736- (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES N. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Desk and Type- WVnt-er Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved desk and type-writer cabinet combined.
The object of my improvement is to so combine a swinging table with a desk having a fixed top that the said swinging table may operate to inclose the type-writer beneath the desk-top when the writer is not in use and to support the type-Writer in operative position, the said table being brought into either position without disturbing the desk-top or material thereon, all as hereinafter fully described. The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section at 2, Fig. 1, showing the cabinet as closed in full lines and as open in dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents, on an enlarged scale, a plan of the under side of the type-Writer table at the line 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a partial section, on an enlarged scale, at the line 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section at the line 5, Fig. 4.
A A are vertical wooden walls forming the sides of the cabinet. Said side walls are connected by a back wall, B, a rear cross-bar, C, a front cross-bar, D, and a desk-top, E, all of which are fastened permanently together, the side walls having in some cases sets of drawers, F F, secured to their outer sides, and the desk-top being in that case of sufficient length to cover the drawers also. To the under side of the desk-top is secured, between the side walls, A, a longitudinal rib, G.
H is the table to which the type-writer (shown in dotted lines) is secured. Said table is of a suitable length to nicely fill the space between the side walls and of sufficient width to fill the space between rib G of the desk-top and the rear cross-bar, G. The table H is mounted on a pair of folding brackets, I I, which are pivoted, respectively, to the side walls, A A, at j j. Each of said brackets consists of an arm, k, which is adapted at one end to be pivoted to the side wall of the cabinet, and is provided, about midway of its length with a forwardly-projecting curved brace, l, and a second arm, m, which is pivoted to arm it near its outer end at u, thus forming a bracket whose arms may be folded one upon the other.
Brace Z is provided wi th a projecting lug, 0, which limits the downward movement of arm m and also with a projecting stop, p, and a notch, 1', which also limit the movement of arm m, as hereinafter explained. The table H being secured at each end to the arms m m of the brackets I I, a pair of catch-levers, s s, are pivoted to the under side of the table. Said levers are arranged so that their free ends project on each side beyond the armsm m of the brackets so as to engage the stops p and the notches r of the braces Z, the catch-levers being held normally in this position by springs 15 t, and being simultaneously retracted by means of the forked rod U.
It will be observed that arms 71; of brackets I I project beyond the point u, where armsm are pivoted thereto. Said projecting parts of arms is engage the inner side of the front cross-bar, D, and thus limit the forward movement of the brackets.
Secured to the inner side of front crossbar, D, are a pair of catch-levers, 'v c. Said catch-levers are arranged to engage and hold the upper ends of brackets I I when raised. They are held normally in position for engagement by springs w w, and are simultaneously retracted by means of a short shaft, 00, arranged to turn in the front cross-bar, and having secured thereto, on the inner side, a lever, g, which is connected to the catch-levers by rods .2 2.
The operation of my device is as follows: The type-writer having been permanently secured to the table H, and the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 2, the type-writer is inclosed and out of the way of one sitting at the desk. levers s s engage the stops p on the braces l of brackets I I, thus supporting the table II in an inclined position, and the arms of the brackets rest on stops like q, secured to the side walls. WVhen the operator desires to bring the typewriter into working position,
When in this position, the catch- IOO he first disengages levers s from the braces Z by pulling rod U outward. This allows arms m of the brackets and table H to swing downward until stopped by the lug 0, as shown in dotted lines at 1, Fig. 2. Brackets I, carrying the table, are now swung outward until their arms 7a are caught and held by the catch-levers 1' 1', thus bringing the table into the po sition shown at 2, Fig. 2. Arms m of the brackets are now swung outward and upward until the catch-levers .s' engage the notches *r of the braces 7, thus locking the table in the position shown in dotted lines at 6, Fig. 2. In returning the type-writer to its position first described these operations are reversed.
It will be observed that the type-writer is thus brought into position for use when wanted and again put away without disturbing any papers or other material which may be lying on the desktop.
I claim as my invention- 1. A combined desk and cabinet consisting of the following elements, namely: a pair of side walls, a back wall, and a desk-top, all secured together in a fixed relation to each other, a pair of brackets each consisting of two arms pivoted together so as to fold one upon the other, one of said arms being pivoied to the side wall of the cabinet, a table mounted on saidfolding arms, means for securing the table in different positions relative to the arms of the brackets which are pivoted to the side walls, and means for locking said arms in a vertical position, all combined and arranged to co-operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the side alls of a type-writer cabinet, the pair of folding brackets, each having an arm, 70, arm m, pivoted.
thereto, and a brace, 1, said brace being provided with a series of stops, the table secured to said brackets, and the catch -levers arranged to engage said stops, all combined and arranged to cooperate substantially as specifled.
3. The combination of a desk having a fixed. top, a pair of brackets pivoted to the supports of said desk-top, and each having a folding arm, a table secured to said folding arms and arranged to swing beneath said desk-top, all arranged to co-operate substantially as specified, whereby the table is folded beneath and projected below and in front of the desk-top, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
