UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES RoeERs RUssELL, or- HOPEWELL HILL, CANADA.
lcE-cR'EPER.
SPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,821, dated J' une 26,' 1894.
Application filed July 14, 1893. Serial Nie. 480.483. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RoGERs RUS- SELL, of Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick, Canada, have invented a new and Improvedlce- Oreeper and Cover for the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is embodied in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of the ice creeper applied. Fg. 2 is a perspective View of the cover; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the heel attachment as applied on the shoe.
The improvementis shown applied to a moccasin but it can be applied to any shoe or boot.
The ice creeper consists of -a flat metallic plate A, bent in U-form as plainly shown in Fig. 1, and provided at its ends with calks B, and with the calk O, in the middle near the outer edge, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 3. The plate A is bent so as to conform to the shape of the rear or heel part of the sole E' of the moccasin E, and the said plate is attached to the sole by screws D, screwing through the sole into tapped apertures in the plate A. The screws are preferably formed with large flat heads which embed themselves in the soft material of the moccasin so as to form no rough projections on the inside thereof. By this arrangement the plate A can be readily removed from or attached to the moccasin whenever desired.
.A device of this description, applied on a moccasin Will enable the wearer thereof to readily walk over ice, slippery ground, or
Support him safely on trees while cuttingthe i F snugly on to the under sideof the plate A as will be readily'understood by reference to Fig. 3. In lorder to securely/ hold this block temporarily in place on the moccasin and permit of conveniently removing it whenever desired, I provide a clamping bar G Secured by staples H in a reoess in the top surface of the block F as shown in Fig. 2. The ends G' of the bars G are bent upwardly and curved to form spring clamps adapted to engage the Sides of the moccasin to securely hold the block F in place and thereby cover up the calks and plate A, and form a heel for the moccasin.
Having thus fully described rny invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of inanufacture, a cover for ice creepers, consisting of ablock recessed to receive the spurs or proj ections of the creeper, and a clamp for seouring the cover to a boot or shoe over the creeper, consisting of a bar Secured to the block and having its ends bent upwardly and outwardly, as set forth.
JAMES ROGERS RUSSELL.
