Be it known that we, HERMANN WETTSTEIN, a citizen of theUnited States, and CARL RD- MANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, having resided one year last past in the United States and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, both residing in the city andbcounty of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new and useful Improvernent in Couplings for Flagstaffs, Sticks, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of novel means Vfor coupling or connecting thel section of a iiag stad, stick, standard, column, &c., the same being hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.

Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a portion of a coupling for a flag staff, ernbodying our invention, some of the parts .being separated in each figure. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof.

Similar letters 0f reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a portion of a nag staff, the same consisting of sections B and C, which are placed together end to end. Connected with the -end of the section B is a collar D whose edge has a recess E therein of angular form, consisting ofthe inclined surface F, and shoulder G. The end of the section C is adapted to enter said collar D, and has secured to it the collar H whose edge has an angular projection or tongue H thereon, the same conforming to andbeing adapted to enter the recess E, while its shoulder J abuts against the shoulder G. Connected with the band K, above the collar D, are pendent spring catches L, whose points or noses M are adapted to enter openings ,N in the collar H, said band being secured to. the section B.

P designates a locking sleeve which encircles the band K, the collar D, the catches L and the collar H, said sleeve when in locking position abutting against the shoulder Q, of the section C of the sta.

The operation is as follows: When the sec tions are to be coupled, they are placed together, as shown in Fig. 1, the sleeveP being raised, and the tongue H is inserted in the recess E, as shown in Fig. 2. The sleeve is now lowered,whereby the catchesL are forced against the collar H, and the bosses M enter the openings N, the sleeve riding over said catches and preventing the latter from opening or spreading outwardly, as will be seen 1n Fig. 3. The downward motion of the sleeve is limited by the shoulder Q, as has been stated, it being noticed that said sleeve virtually embraces portions of the opposite ends of the sections, and as the catches are controlled by the same, and the tongue H interlocks with the walls of the recess E and the shoulders G and J abut, it is evident that the sections are firmly connected.v ln order to disconnect the sections, the sleeve is moved back, whereby the catches are released and .they spring out from the collar H, and either section is rotated so that the tongue H rides on the inclined surface, or vice-versa, whereby the collars are forced away from each other,

and the sections are accordingly separated, said tongue and surface being especially serviceable should there be any sticking of the collars or ends of the sections, in `which case the movement of the tongue and surface readily overcomes such sticking 1n an easy and powerful manner. The band K, Vthe outer surfaces of the catches L, and the lowerportion of the collar H are flush so that the sleeve may readily ride over the same and form close joints therewith. l

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A coupling for a sectional flag staff, consisting of two interlocking collars adapted to be secured to adjacent ends of the sections of the staif, a catch secured to one of the collars and adapted to engage with the other collar, and a sliding sleeve movable on one of said sections and adapted to close said catch, said parts being combined substantially as described. A y 2. A stad, dac., formed in sections, with collars on the ends thereof, a catch on one collar adapted to interlock with the other collar,

"and a sleeve adapted to embrace said collars 10o and catch, one of the collars having an angular recess which receives a projecting tongue on the other section the parts named being combined substantially as described.

A staff formed in sections, one of which has the shoulder Q thereon, the collars K and H secured to said sections one of said collars having a recess in its side, and the other hav ing a tongue engaging in said recess, a catch ro secured to one of said collars and provided with a stud entering an opening in the other collar, and a locking sleeve operating said catch, and adapted to rest on said shoulder, said parts being combined substantlally as described.
