UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELS NEILEN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
GARMENT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,964, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed October 26, 1893. fierial No. 489,230. (No model.)
hereby declare the following to be a full,.
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of devices upon which garments may be hung against the wall, and its object is to adapt such a device to be made asa part of apocket knife, or to be made to carry in the pocket independently of a knife, with means for securing itself to awooden wall or door, and to serve when so secured, as a hook upon which garments may be hung, and which when not needed for this purpose may be readily removed from the wall and its movable parts he closed to be carried in the pocket like a knife.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forminga garment hanger, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, represents a garment hanger according to my invention, in side elevation, attached to a wall, in position for service. Fig. II, is a front or edgewise view of the same device, and Fig. III, represents the same with the near side removed to expose to view the working parts as they appear when closed for the device to be carried in the pocket.
5 represents the frame or body of my garment hanger.
6 represents aclaw pivoted at 7 in the frame.
8-is another claw pivoted at 9 in the frame and provided with a handle 10 by means of which the book may be turned upon its pivot.
11 and 12 represent gear teeth upon the two hooks fitted to engage each other for the purpose of causing the upper hook to rotate in conjunction with the lower hook.
The operation is as follows: The device in its normal position may be carried in the pocket with its claws closed into the body and the hook or handle laid fiat against its edge as shown in Fig. III. In this closed condition the device is to be pressed firmly against the wall 13, then the handle 10 is to be opened and pulled downward with sufficient force to project the claws into the wall, thus firmly securing the hanger to the wall and leaving the handle 10 projecting to serve as a hook upon which a garment of any kind may be hung. It will be seen that the weight of the garment so hung tends to project the claws by Letters Patent, is the following:
The combination in a garment hanger of a body; two claws pivoted therein on two separate pivots and geared to coact, one of the said claws being provided with a garment hook, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELS NEILEN.
