UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. HOLBROOK, OF SING SING, NEW YORK.
IMPRGAOVEMENT m i'RAvEuNe-B'Ae RETAINING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 56,484, dated November 3, 1874 application filed July 18,1874. 7
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID L. HoLBRooK, of Sing Sing, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traveling-Bag Fastener, of which the following is a specificationi I Figure 1 is a view illustrating the use of my improved fastener. Fig. '2 is a view. of
' the fastener, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of a part of the same. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the ring.

My invention has for its object to furnish a simple, convenient, and inexpensive device for securing a traveling-bag to a car-seat or other object during the temporary absence of the owner.
The invention consists in an improved traveling-bag fastener formed of the angle-plate, or equivalent, provided with a bentarm, the chain and the link or ring, constructed as hereinafter described, to adapt it to be used in connection with a travelingbag, as set forth.
A is a metallic plate, bent at right angles, and strengthened at its angle by braces a. From the angle of the plateA projects an arm, a bent into such a shape that it may be shut into the frame or jaws of a traveling-bag, with the angle-plate A within the bag, and
the outer end of the said arm projecting. To 1 the end of the arm a is attached the end of a chain, B, to the other end of which is attached a ring or large link, 0, of such a size that the angle-plate A may be passed through it.
In using the device the chain B is passed around the arm of the car-seat, or around any other object to which the bag is to be secured. The angle-plate A is then passed through the ring or link 0, is placed within the travelingbag, the jaws or frame of said traveling-bag closed upon the arm a and the bag locked.
With this fastening the bag cannot be removed without first unlocking it.
The exact form of the angle-plate or fastenerA is immaterial, so long as it is such that pulling upon it will not force the jaws or frame of the bag apart; that it will not cut or injure the contents of said bag, and shall be provided with an arm, a so formed as to shut into the jaws or frame of the bag without straining them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved traveling-bag fastener, formed of the angle-plate A, or equivalent, provided with an arm, a the chain B, and the link or ring 0, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it to be used in connection with a traveling'bag, as set forth.
DAVID LEVERETT HOLBROOK.
