Description

UNTTEO STATES PATENT Tirreno IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5l,974, dated January 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SCOTT, of Ocala, in the county of Marion and State Ot Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a front view of my truss extended its entire length. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe pressure-pad with belt attachment, Szc. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the truss in its Ordinary position when applied to the part affected. Fig. 4 is a metallic plate forming the outer face of the pressure-pad, and Fig. 5 shows a metallic ring, to which said plate is attached when the pressure-pad is made of glass, porcelain, hard rubber, Or any similar substance. 4
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improved truss, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the pressure-pad, which may be made of solid wood or any other suitable substance, or may be made hollow, of glass, metal, porcelain, hard rubber, or any other similar material.
B is a belt or band to pass around the body, and may be made gf cloth, webbing, leather, or other flexible and non-elastic material.
C is a strap, which serves to hold the pad and belt in position. It is fastened at one end to the belt, and, passing under the thigh, is hooked to the pin a in the metallic face of the pressure-pad by means of a notched aperture in the plate or buckle E.
F is a buckle or metal attachment ou the end of the belt B, which tits over the pin-head b and secures the belt around the body, and tends to keep the pressure-pad in proper position. The beltis furtherprovided with abuckle, G, which has a hinged joint, H, ou the face of the metal plate I), turning freely on the screw or pivot c. The belt B, at both ends, and the strap C being attached to the face-plate of the pressure-pad by means of pivot-joints, no movement of the body or change in the position of the muscles will move the pressurepad from its proper position on the part affected.
The use of a band or strap with the attachments herein described, in lieu of the spring heretofore in use, enables the patient to wear the truss with ease while performing any kind of exercise or labor, and even to sleep comfortably with the pad in proper position.
When the pressure-pad is made of metal, glass, porcelain, hard rubber, Or any other similar substance, a metallic ring,p, Fig. 5, is fixed firmly in the outer rim thereof, to which the metal face-plate D may be screwed, and on the inner side of said face-plate a piece of metal, q, Fig. 4, is attached, to give it sufficient thickness and substance tO support the screw c and the pivot-pins or buttons a I).
Practice proves that the use of this truss sometimes produces adhesive iniiammation, thus closing the opening through which the hernia descends, and by this means a radical cure is produced, which is mainly attributable to the fact that this pad and attachments may be readily adjusted in proper position, and when thus adjusted will remain xed, with little, if any, liability to be dislodged.
Both the belt B and strap C are provided with sliding buckles c and f for giving them the required length.
Fig. 3 shows this truss in the position it assumes when worn by the patient.
I am aware that trusses have been heretofore made with the band which en'circles the body attached at each end to the face-plate of the pad by two pins Or screws; but it is manifest that the pad cannot swivel freely On the band when so attached.
That I claim, therefore, as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Attaching each end of the band B and one end of the strap G to the face-plate of the pad by a single pivot, substantially as and for the purpose described.
