SPECULUM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,842, dated March 20, 1894.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILHELM SCHEERER,'X'6- siding at Tuttlingen, Wiirtemberg, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Surgical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a conical spring adjustment for specula and similar instruments. 1

The object of my invention is to produce a portable speculum.

The invention consists of such features, details of construction, and combinations of parts as will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings-Figure l is a front elevation of a speculum embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view. Fig. (i is a front elevation of the speculum proper. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same.

An inspection of the accompanying drawings representing a speculum with the handle, shows that the mode of adjustment of the same, under myinvention, differs from those heretofore made in being essentially simplified by dispensing with all screws, eccentric clamps, and the like. The handle, A, is provided at its upper end with a smooth comicallyenlarged or flaring shank, a, while the speculum proper, B, is provided with a correspondingly-conical spring sleeve, provided with the open slot, 0, and the flaps or lips, 01, d, which have a spring action. In order to prevent the twisting of the speculum proper, when in use, the end of the shank,a, may be provided with a lug, or short stud,f, either fixed, or adapted to be unscrewed from the shank.

When it is desired to connectthe speculum proper with the handle, A, for use, the former is placed into the position indicated in dotted lines, in Fig. 4, the part of the handle, designated by e, entering the slot, 0, in the sleeve of the speculumproper. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a two-part speculum, the combination, of a handle provided with a conical shank,

with a speculum proper having an open spring sleeve, adaped to engage the shank, substantially as set forth.

2. In atwo-part speculum, the combination, with a handle provided with a conical shank, and aspeculum proper havingan open spring sleeve arranged to engage the shank, of a stud on the conical shank adapted to engage the open slotin the sleeve, to prevent twisting or turning of the speculum proper, substantially as set forth.
