To all whom it may concern:

, Be it known that I, JAMES H. BROOKMIRE, J12, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Music Stand and Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.

My invention relates to a music stand and case so constructed and combined that, when not in use, the stand, with the music, can be inclosed by the case, and when in use the case with the stand serves to hold the music.

My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. X is a similar view showing the music rest shelf in using position. Fig. XI is an enlarged detail view, showing the lower end of the stand. Fig. XII is a section taken on line XII-XII, Fig. XI. Fig. XIII is an enlarged detail side elevation, showing the upper end of the stand. Fig. XIV is an enlarged longitudinal section of the upper end of the stand.

Referring to the drawings: 1 represents the shaft of the stand which is composed of two or more telescoping sections held by set screws 2. The lower section is provided with a sliding collar, 3, held by a set screw 4 and provided with ears 5, to which the legs 6 are secured, pivotally, by pins 7, see Figs. XI and XII.

8 represents a cap secured to the end of the lower section of the shaft by a screw 9, (see Figs. III and IV) or otherwise. This cap has perforations or openings 10 to receive the legs 6. The center of the cap inside of the perforations 10, is of such size that when the collar 3 is forced to the lower end of the lower section of the shaft, the legs will be spread out as shown in Fig. VI and will form a support for the shaft, and when the collar is raised to the upper end of the section of the shaft the legs will be brought in close to the section, as shown in Fig. III. Secured to the upper end of the shaft is a head 11, see Figs. III, XIII and XIV, by means of a screw 12. To this head is secured a cap 13 which is held at right angles to the shaft, (Fig. III) or at an angle thereto, see Fig. XIII, by means of a spring actuated pin 14, the outer conical end of which fits in notches 15 in the head,

the pin and spring fitting in the hollow end of the upper section of the shaft as shown in Fig. III. The caps 8 and 13 have inturned flanges 16, as shown in Figs. I, II and III.

17 represents the case within which the music 18 is held, see Fig. III. The case is flexible so as to be formed into a roll and fit within the flanges 16, of the caps, when the stand is telescoped. The case may have a handle 19 for carrying it and near each edge at the middle is a headed pin 20, see Fig. II, and at the edges, near the ends, are suitable clasps or holders 21. At the back of the case is a bar 22 pivoted to the case at 23, see Fig. I. The ends of this bar are notched to receive pins 24: on the caps 8 and 13 when the parts are folded. The bar 22 also has notches 25 in its opposite edges to receive the pins 20, when the case is opened out and the bar thus serves to hold the casein a flat open position to serve as a music rack or rest, see Fig. VI. On the bar 22 are also pins 26 adapted to fit in bayonet slots 27 in the cap 13, see Figs. III and V. It will thus be understood that the shaft of the stand may be telescoped to fit within the roll of music with caps 8 and 13 forming the ends of the case as shown in Figs. I, II, and III, and when the parts are to be used the sections of the stand are drawn out and held by the set screws 2, and the legs drawn out and held by the collar 3 and set screw 4., at which time the case is held expanded or fiat by the bar 22, which serves to attach it to the cap 18 so that it may be used as a rack or rest for the music, the desired inclination being given through means of the notched head 11 and spring 14.

Secured to one edge of the case is a hinged strip or shelf 28, see Figs. VII to X, which when opened out as shown in Fig. X serves to receive the lower edge of the music, as will be readily understood.

1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a music stand, and a music case, provided with means by which it may be converted into a music-rack when opened, and adapted to contain the music stand when closed, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a telescoping music stand, and a music case adapted to contain said stand provided with means to adapt it to form a music rack or rest by being attached to one end of said stand substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of a music stand made in sections and a music case adapted to contain the stand and to be opened out and attached to the stand to form a rest for the music, substantially as set forth. v

4. The combination of a music stand made in telescoping sections, a sliding collar fitting on the lower section, legs pivoted to the collar, a cap secured to the section and having perforations to receive the legs, a cap secured to the upper section of the stand and a music case adapted to contain said stand and fit between said caps, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of a collapsible music stand, a cap fitted on each end of the stand, and a music case adapted to contain said stand and fit between said caps provided with means by which it is adapted to form a music rack or rest, substantially as set forth.

6. In combination with a telescoping music stand having an adjustable perforated cap 13, the case having a bar 22 provided with pins to fit in said perforated head and notch and pin connection with the case by which it is adapted to hold the case in an open position, substantially as set forth. g
