NEWSPAPER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1918.
Application filed September 29, 1916. Serial No. 122,895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN T. GAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention more especially relates to a device in which a newspaper may be conveniently slid and detachably held in a portable tubular and longitudinally slotted support, which, preferably at its lower end, is provided with a handle adapted to be grasped by the reader while he is holding up and perusing the paper, and also at its other end with a ring or hook whereby the device, either with or without the newspaper, may be hung up when not in use.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the device with a newspaper inserted therein for the perusal of the reader. Fig. 2 is a full size view, partly in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section somewhat enlargedtaken as on the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing the tubular support and an attached or inserted multipaged newspaper. Fig. 4: is an enlarged view showing the upper part of the device.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the tubular support longitudinally slotted as at 4, and 2 the handle. The newspaper, which is held in the slot 4, is designated by A. (Jentrally of the tubular support 1 is a rod 5. This rod is rigidly attached to the handle 2 as seen in Fig. 2, and passes through the entire length of the tubular support, and is provided with a suspension ring or hook 3.
The upper end of the support 1 is given a curved or angular shape as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, which furnishes an insert opening for the newspaper.
In operation, the newspaper A is at its fold slipped over the ring or hook 3 and its rod 5, and slid down past the insert opening so as to assume the position seen in Fig. 1, when it is capable of being conveniently spread open. by the reader. The newspaper is kept in the slot 4 by means of the rod 5 as will be understood.
The reader having perused, say, the first page of the newspaper may conveniently turn it back upon the last sheet, and con tinue such action in a way fully understood, until all the pages have been read by him.
I claim as my invention In a newspaper holder, the combination of a handle, a tube rigidly fixed thereto, said tube having a continuous longitudinal slot above said handle and. at its upper end a curved or angular opening furnishing an insert for the newspaper, and a rod rigidly attached to said handle concentrically of said tube, said rod having a projecting guiding end to cooperate with the insert end of said tube, the construction being such that a folded newspaper may be slipped over the projecting guiding end of said rod into the insert of the tube and carried down the slotted tube to said handle.
