WATCH MAKERS BENCH-TOOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,971, dated February 20, 1894.

Application filed April 17. 1893.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. STEBBINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, county of Van Buren, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Watchmakers Bench-Tool, of which the following from the balance shaft, and without heating any part of the watch, and for holding other parts of the watch while repairing, and rings and brooches while soldering, and small articles tobe engraved.

a To this end the invention consists in general of a peculiarly constructed stock, to be held by a vise or otherwise in a fixed and convenient position, and of jaws for holding the balance-wheel while re-setting the roller jewel and forholding other parts referred to.

In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View; Fig. 2 a vertical central section of Fig. 1, taken on line 1-1, in Fig. 4; Fig. 3 an elevation of one of the'jaws'; and Fig. 4 a plan view.

Referring to the lettered parts ofthe drawings, A is the stock, formed at the bottom for entering the vise or otherwise and having aflat, table-like top surface,B. Central in the top'ot' the stock is a vertical hole, 0, formed to receive the lower end of the balanceshaft, D. Extending laterally from the upper end of the hole 0 is an open slot or mortise, E, Figs. 2 and 4. This slot is made of just the proper depth and width to receive the roller jewel, F, so that the operator may know that the roller jewel, when it rests on the bottom of said slot,is of a proper height to be cemented in the roller table, G, in said position. The bottom of this slot also prevents the roller jewel from falling out.

The jaws, H, have a pendent, threaded stem, 1, which passes loosely through the top,

. side of the top, B, to bring the proper pressure to bear upon the jaws.

These jaws, H, catch over the balance-wheel, as in Fig. 1, and by properly adjusting the nuts J, hold said balance-wheel and roller table firmly in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while setting the roller jewel, F.

The operator with a pair of tweezers can raise the hair spring, L, out of the way, without detaching it from the balance-wheel,

while cementing the roller jewel in the roller table, which can be doneby warming the cement with alittle heated rod employed by the watchmaker for the purpose, without heating any other parts of the watch.

A ring can be placed beneath the jaws, H, the same as the balance-wheel is placed, and be held while soldering, the same as can be heldsmall articles for engraving, or any other parts to be operated upon.

Having thus described my'invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,iis'- 1. A tool 'comprisinga suitable stock having a table-like top, a hole or socket in said top, an open mortise leading laterally from said hole, said open mortise being ota depth corresponding to the proper height of the roller jewelof a watch, and adjustable clamping jaws attached to the top of the stock; substantially as set forth.

2. A tool comprising a suitable stock having a table-like top, a hole or socket in said top,

an open mortise leading laterally from said hole, said open mortise being of a depth corresponding to the proper height of the roller jewel of a watch, adjustable clamping jaws attached to the top of the stock, said jaws having screw threaded stems loosely inserted in holes. through the table-like top of the stock, and nuts on said threaded stems beneath the top; substantially as set forth.
