PUNCHING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 26, 1912. Serial No. 686,375.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, ELMER O. BECKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in punching implements, and refers particularly to an implement designed especially for use by jewelers and watchmakers in the removing of rivets from brooches and belt pins, broken screws of clock and watch plates, and kindred articles.
The leading object of the invention is to provide an implement of this character which will embody means for receiving and retaining various sized rivet joints from which the rivets are to be extracted.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple and eflicient form of rivet holding arm whereby the rivet punch may be disposed directly above the rivet joint to receive the impact from the hammer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rivet punch of small and compact size, of simple and economical construction, and capable of production at a cost tocom-- mend itself to all persons desiring an article of this character.
To attain the desired objects, the invention, broadly stated consists in the provision of a rivet punch embodying a base block, a peripherally grooved mandrel rotatable thereon, and an integrally formed punch carrying arm formed on said base block, the invention further residing in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete tool, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
In the drawings :-The letter A designates the base or bed block, formed with the integral arm B, terminating in a sleeve C, in which is removably mounted a rivet punch D, adapted to receive the impact from a hammer or the like.
The letter E designates a rotatable mandrel or head, mounted on the pivot or arbor F, which passes therethrough and has its inner end threaded at G to engage the corresponding threads of the opening H of the block A.
The mandrel E is preferably octagonal in contour and has the plain upper face J; the face K, formed with the recess or pocket K; the face L, formed with the recess or pocket L of slightly less diameter; the face M, having the recess or pocket M of smaller diameter than the recess L and alsotapered rearwardly; the face N, having the recess or pocket N, of smaller diameter thanthe recess M; the face 0, having the recess or pocket O of smaller diameter than the recess N; the face Q, having the half-round recess Q; and the face R, having the recess or pocket R, of slightly larger diameter than the recess Q. From this construction it will be seen that the mandrel is rotatable upon the block to bring any one of the recesses to register with the punch D, and that the varying sectional contours of the respective recesses permit the application of various sized rivet joints.
While I have shown and described certain forms of recesses in the mandrel, it will of course be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular sectional contour, but reserve the right to employ any desired shape or number of these recesses.
The octagonal shape of the mandrel constitutes an important feature of my invention in that the recesses are presented in the proper position with reference to the punching tool and the opposite face rests flatly and securely upon a table or surface and holds the mandrel rigid under the impact or striking action of the punch and thus the mandrel can be readily turned to present any of the recesses and when properly adjusted, the punch can be used without fear of turning the mandrel. Also the peculiar arrangement of the screw provides a rotary axis for the mandrel and permits the taking up of any wear between the inner face of the mandrel and the base block.
