BROOM.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL YOUNG, of the town of Burlington, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fi 2 represents a transverse section of the same. Fi 3 represents an end view of the case, showing the parts thereof;

Similar letters of reference, when they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts of the device in both of the drawings.

My invention consists in a device for holding and fastening broom-corn in a suitable term for a broom without the use of twine or wire, and also so arranged that it can be adapted to paint, whitewash, and other like brushes.

To enable others skilled in theart to make and use myinven tion, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

In the drawings, 1? is the case for receiving the material of which the broom or brush is to be composed. This case may be of sheet iron, brass, tin, or any thin metallic substance that will admit of bending or being pressed to a proper shape, as shown in the drawings, Figs. 1 and 3, and may be of any suitable size for a broom or clothes, paint or whitewash, brush, or any like brushes wherein broom-corn or bristles are used.

A is the ferrule, which receives the handle T, and has at its lower extremity arms a at, extending outward laterally to the edge of the case, and has clasps thereon at their outward ends jutting over the corners of and extending downward on the edge of the case to a distance sufficient to give the required strength to the same laterally. Said ferrule has also lips or projections I 1, extending downward on the sides of the case at right angles with arms nn to a given distance,that will admit of a bolt, 0, passing through their lower edge through the case and fork F, and thus firmly connect the same. This fork or piece of metal extends upward from the lower edge of the case internally to the top, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper ends thereof being connected as one, forming the shank which passes through the upper edge of the case into the handle, inside the ferrule A, and is se- V shaped curely fastened thereto by means of a bolt, pin, or its equivalent, or may be screwed into the handle, as may be found most advantageous in manufacturing.

(Jase P is formed first by being cut in proper shape to admit of its outward edge being bent to a required angle, that when the ends of the case are brought around and together to the required distance the bent edges will jut past each other and give the edge of the broom or brush a square form longitudinally, also protect and keep in due shape the outward fibers of the brush.

There is also a metallic wire pressed or looped into the lower edge of the case laterally, giving the required strength to the sides and forming a joint for a series of hinged clasps, one, two, three, four, more or less, which pass through the brush and hook or clasp around the wire or opposite edge of the case, as shown in Fig. 2.

There is also a second bolt, 0, passing through the lower edge of the case and end of fork F, by which the same are compressed together.

The objects of this device, with its arrangements, are several: First, by making the case of thin sheet metal it can be of about one-half the heft of any heretofore-known arrangement with metallic frame, wherein the brush can be. removed; second, by the use of this style of ferrule, together with the fork or V shaped piece, as described, the broom or brush can be more permanently fastened to the handle with less liability of getting out of order; and, third, as the brush becomes worn out and imperfect the case can be readily adjusted by removing bolts 0 0 and clasps 1 2 3 4, the old brush removed, and new brush applied, the bolts and clasps replaced, and thus make the broom or brush as perfect as new.

Having thus fully described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of ferrule A, fork F, case B, bolt 0 0", and clasps l 2 3 4, the whole constructed, arranged, and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
