SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,788, dated May 23, 1893.

To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. HARD- CASTLE, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and ALBERT H. BARDSLEY, residing at Rosedale, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brush-Bridles; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention presents the following advantages. It is adapted to be used on brushes or brooms. It is easily and quickly adjusted. It prevents spreading of the bristles or broom straws. In the case of paint brushes it is easily removed for cleaning the brush. It saves color and allows stiffer color to be used.

The drawings show its application to a flat paint brush, but it is readily adapted to oval and round brushes by simply bending the clamps to the required form.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a paint brush with our bridle in operative position upon it. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same enlarged; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the invention opened.

Like letters denote corresponding parts in the various views.

The bridle is formed of two clamps or loops, of which the upper one A, is adapted to engage the lower portion of the brush handle and is provided with hinges a. a. and the lower clamp or loop embraces the bristles at the desired place below the handle. These two clamps are connected by the rod or twisted link 0. at one side and by the pendant d and loop e. at the other side.

This invention may be constructed of any preferred material but as shown in the drawings the parts are all made of three pieces of wire, the section A. d. and e. of one piece and the section B, and c. of two pieces, the two sections being connected by the hinges a.

a. formed by hooking together the bent ends of the wires, and when applied to a brush by springing the curved disengaged ends f. f. of the clamp B, into the terminal loop e. of the clamp A. The loop 8. is of such lateral extent as requires some compression of the clamp B. against the bristles to engage it. In applying the same bridle to brushes of varying thicknesses this loop e. is readily bent to the required width; and so likewise is the spread of the clamp I5. at its opposite side bent to correspond.

Having described our invention, what we claim is- 1. A bridle for brushes and brooms having two clamps of which the upper one is adapted to clasp the brush handle, is hinged, and has a pendant with terminal loop, and a part opposite, and corresponding to said pendant'and connecting with the lower clamp which is adapted to embrace the bristles,and two hooks on said lower clamp to engage the loop on the pendant as described.

2. A wire brush bridle formed of two clamps connected at one side by a fixed link and at the other by the curved ends of the lowerclamp engaging the pendantloop on the upperclamp, the said upper clamp having looped hinges as described.

3. A wire brush bridle formed of an upper clamp A. adapted to engage the brush handle and having hinges a, a, pendant (l, and loop 6. a lower clamp B. to clasp the bristles, and having hooks f.f. to engage the loop e, and a twist-ed link 0. to connect said clamps substantially as herein set forth.

4. In a brush bridle having two clamps connected by a fixed link and opposite thereto a corresponding pendant and fastening, two hinges on the upper clamp, whereby the bridle may be opened for adjustment on a brush substantially as set forth.
