FREDERICK W. TAYLOR, -OF LOl/VELL, MASSACHUSETTS.`
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,338, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed `February 20. 1893. Serial No. 462,946. (No model.)
To all whom t may cm2/cern,.- Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. TAYLOR,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented ycertain new and useful Improvements in GarmentSup porters; andl I do hereby declare the followa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to garment 'supporters and is more especially designed in use for trousers, its object being to providea cheap, simple and eeective device for supporting and preserving the shape of the said garments when not in actual use.
To this end my invention consists of a device constructed preferably of wire in the form of two skeleton side pieces which when Each jaw is formed of a single piece of wire in one, and at the central portion thereof is formed a loop, through which is passed the two projecting ends ofthe opposite jaw. The longer of these two ends is formed into a supporting hook for the device.- The other or shorter end is twisted or entwined about the shank of the longer one, thus serving the purpose as a check for the runner or slide which embraces both the said loop and shank ofthe hook, which improvement will be more fully set forth in the following specification and such characteristic features as I believe to be new and novel, particularly pointed out in the claims to follow. v
To enable others to understand my said invention reference is had to the accompanylng drawings and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l, represents a side elevation of the device showing a section of a trousers leg suspended therefrom. Fig. 2, is an end ele vation of the same. Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view on the line y'of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an end elevation and open position of the supporter.
Its construction and operation are as follows:
l represents the stationary and 2'the movable jaw. The former, consistingsee Fig. 1-of a single piece of wire bent into the oblong figure and projected outward at right` angles therefrom and twisted about each other; the longer end a extending far enough to form the hook portion c as shown. The other or movable, jaw 2 is an exact counterpart of the other with the exception that in the center of the upper rail 2a is formed the bend or loop d. The upper rails la and 2a of the jaws are operatively united together by means of the clasps or Vbands forming a hinge for the said jaw 2. When assembled together, the twisted shank of the hook c will pass through the loop d, as shown more clearly at Fig. l, and therunner or slide 4 will embrace both said shank and loop, and the corrugated surface formed by the twisting of the short and long ends ofthe jaw l as before mentioned, will serve to hold the runner 4 in place and lock the jaws in a closed position. When-see Fig. 4-the two jaws l and 2 are brought together, rthe loop d will stand at an angle to the twisted shank portion of the suspending `hook c so that the pressure will be required to spring said loop toward said shank portion, so as to enable the runner 4 to be carried up to the position shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3. When'the inward pressure on said loop is removed, its resiliency will, in combination with the retaining feature of the runner 4 and twisted shank portion before mentioned, exert sufficient holding pressureon the material placed between the jaws. To loosen this grip, itis only necessary to grasp the hook shank and loop between the thumb and finger and exert a slight pressure when the runner will become disengaged and fall from its own weight. In forming these jaws l and 2, I preferably spread them at either end as at lb and 2b, (see Figs. 2, 3 and 4) for the purpose of giving additional strength to the device, and allowing a garment to be readily attached to the hanger.
In applying this device, the leg portions A, (Fig. l) of the trousers are laid together wit-hl proper regard to the folds therein, land the ends are inserted between the befo're mentioned jaws and the whole suspended by means of the hook c from any convenient place.
From the foregoing, it will beobserved that the construction is cheap, simple and effect ive. The jaws are Wide enough to admit gar- IOO ments of any and all widths, and, suspending them from the bottom and between surfaces or jaws that exert a pressure the entire width of the leg, the whole weight of the garment will tend to preserve the proper form and retain the longitudinal creases in the leg portion thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what therefore I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'1. As an improved article of manufacture, a garment supporter of the character described, comprisingr in combination twooblong gripping jaws operatively hinged together asshown, one of said jaws having a loop and the other a hook portion extending at right angles from the center of said jaws,
a runner or slide embracing the shank of such hook and said loop for retaining said jaws in a closed position, set forth.
2.2The herein described article of manufacture for supporting garments as shown, which consists of two sections constructed each of a single piece of wire, bent so as to form an oblong iigure representing the gripping or holding jaws, in one of said sections, the projecting ends are bent at right angles to the jaw, one of such ends being longerand formed into a hook portion from whichthe device is suspended, the other or shorter end twisted or entwined about the shank of such hook,`the other section of the device having a yloop'or bend therein formed midway of the jaw, said sections hinged together so that the said shank portion will pass through the loop of thel section, a runner or slide to embrace both said loop and shank andhold the jaws in a closed position.
3. In combination, a garment supporter arranged in two sections each constructed from a single piece of wire and bent into the oblong ligure to form the gripping jaws and hinged together as shown, the projecting ends of one of the sections being of different lengths and bent at right angles to the jaw or main portion thereof, such ends en twined about each other, the longer one terminating in a hook portion, a loop formed midway 1n the other section to embrace the shank portion of such hook, a runner embracing both,
A such loop and shank, said loop normally arranged at an angle with the said portion so that by means of its resilient actions, combined with the runner and 'twisted portion of the said shank portion the jaws are firmly locked together, substantially as shown.
It. The combination in a trousers hanger formed principally ot two parts, each' part composed of a single piece of wire andcomprising a loop shaped gripping `jaw hinged together at their tops and having their ends suitably spread as described of suitable mechanism whereby the same is locked together, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK WV. TAYLOR.
