THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,165, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed June 12, 1893. Serial No. 477,332- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. Ho'rcnxrss, of \Vallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Antirattlers for Thill-Coup lings; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improved antirattling device for thill couplings, the object being to produce a simple and cheap device which may be readily applied to thill couplings, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
As herein shown, the anti-rattling device is applied to a coupling of ordinary construc* tion, consisting of a clip A, adapted to be applied to an axle B, the lower ends of the clip passing through a plate C below the axle, where they are secured by nuts D. From the forward side of the clip, arms EE extend, between which the thill-eye is held by a bolt G. The anti-rattling device consists of a longitudinally bowed plate I-l, preferably formed from cast metal and constructed with earsI I, at its upper end. The upper edge between the ears is thicker than the body portion of the plate and is constructed with a recess J. \Vithin this recess is a stud K. The lower end of the plate is constructed with an internally screw threaded perforation adapted to receive a screw L.
M is a spring corresponding in width to the width of the plate H, and is constructed at its upper end with an opening N, corresponding in size to the stud K, over which it is placed, the upper end of the spring resting within the recess J, which protects its upper edge, and prevents turning.
To apply the anti-rattling device, the screw L is withdrawn, and the spring placed in position on the plate H, and the plate and spring inserted between the clip and the thill-eye, and forced downward until the shoulders II, of the plate rest on the top of the arms E E. The screw is then inserted through the plate H and turned against the spring N, forcing the spring outward against the thill-eye, thereby forcing the thill-eye against its bolt G.
If desired a jam nut 0, may be applied to the screw L to prevent any possible accidental displacement.
I claim 7 1. The herein described anti-rattling device for thill couplings, consisting of a curved plate constructed with arms at its upper end, a spring, removably secured to the front face of the said plate at its upper end, andascrew adapted to force thelower end of the spring from the said plate, substantially as described.
2. The herein described anti-rattling device for thill couplings, consisting of a plate constructed at its upper end with laterally projecting ears and a forwardly projecting stud, a spring constructed at one end with an opening which receives the said stud, and a screw passing through the lower end of the said plate, and impinging against the spring, substantially as described, and whereby by turning the screw the spring may be forced away from the plate.
