Beit known that I, JESSE P. FORBES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new Vand useful Im'- provements in Coupon-Books; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to m'ake and use the same. n

This invention relates to coupon books4 to y be used commercially, each coupon representing a money value and receivable by the merchant or indorser of saidl book for the face value represented byveach coupon composing the book.

The object of theinvention is to facilitate the transaction of business and obviate as much as possible the keeping of accounts because said coupon books will be issued to a customer and the value of the book charged t0 his account thereby obviating the itemizing of small purchases, which latter are paid for by coupons taken from the book, one or more coupons being taken as may be required by the amount of a purchase.

The improvement consists essentially of a coupon'book comprising a series of coupon Strips of different denominate values arranged to expose the margin of the coupon strips on one side and having the exposed margin marked to indicate the value of the coupon which is opposite said mark, and having the coupons separated by lines of perforations.

The improvement further consists inhaving the coupon strips of the higher denomination wider than the coupon strips of the next lower denomination, thereby providing a margin to receive the character or numeral indicating the value of the coupon.

The improvement further consists iu having a series of coupon strips of each denomination placed one upon the other, and having the strips of each denomination of the same width.

The improvement also consists in the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which 'will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- J Figure-1 is a top plan view of a coupon book of my invention. In'general appearance the coupon book will represent an ordinary pass book or pocket memorandum book. On lthe cover will be printed the name of the merchant, iirm, or person issuing the book such as Roes Coupon Book. Below this will appear the following or other appropriate matter indicating the ownership of the book, the value of said book in merchandise, and the place of business at which said book is negotiable to the extent of the value represented by the coupons contained therein. In the Apresent instance this matter is arranged substantiallyasshown in Fig.V 1 and reads asiV follows: This coupon vbook is the property of Mr. and is good for $10, in merchandise at the store of John Doe when signed by him, Coshocton, Ohio, followed by the date which in the present instance is July 1, 1892. On the inside of the cover or otherwise suitably displayed will be a notice requesting theownerpof-the book to make known the loss of the same should a loss occur and a further notice stating that the coupons willnot be good if detached,and furthermore that said book will not `be good unless signed by the proprietor, irm or person running the business at which the book will be received and honored.

YOn the iiy leaf or other portion of the book will be a certificate statingthatthe book has been properly purchased and indicating the value of the same,'the nameof the purchaser and the date. All this matter is indicated in Fig; 2 of the drawings.

The coupon strips A will be of proper size and contain the desired number o f coupons B which have a margin C at one end to receive a character or numeral corresponding with the face value of the coupon. The coupons will be separated by a line of perforations a. The total value represented by each coupon strip will be placed at the bottom of each slip.

The coupons will contain matter indicating IOO the value of the same in merchandise and when desired thename of the place of business at which said book will be received and honored to the extent of the value represented by the coupon contained in vthe book. The coupon strips will be provided in series, each higher denominate value of the series being arranged so as to expose the margin upon which the indicating character or numeral is placed, thereby providing an index which will facilitate the finding of the coupon desired. In the preferable form of construction the coupon strips will be of graduated widths, the strips of the higher denominate value being Wider than the strip of the next lower denomination corresponding to the Width of the exposed margin upon which the indicating character or numeral representing the value of the coupon is placed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A coupon book in which the coupons are receivable at a given place for an equivalent value in merchandise, composed of a series of strips of different denominate values, bound in book form and arranged to expose a mal'- gin of a strip corresponding to a denominate value, each strip being composed of a serles of coupons separated by lines of perforations and having a character or numeral on the enposed margin corresponding with' and indicating the face value of the said coupon, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A coupon bcok in which the coupons are receivable at a given place for an equivalent value in merchandise, composed of a series of strips of different denominate values bound in book form, the said strips being of different Widths and arranged to expose a margin at one edge and composed of a number of coupons separated by lines of perforations, and having a character or numeral on the exposed margin opposite and corresponding with the face value of the coupon to indicate they value of the same, and having the total value of the coupons on each strip placed at the end thereof, substantially as described.
