GUN-SIGHT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,696, dated September 5, 1893.

,To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. ARMITSTEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mazomanie, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in an improved construction of combined open and peep sights, and in an adjustable contrivance of the peep sight for varying the size of the opening to adapt it for different lengths of range, and for different conditions of the atmosphere, and of light and shade all as hereinafter fully described reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure lis a front elevation of my improved sight adjusted for a peep sight. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same adjusted for an open sight. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 00 m Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line y y Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the sight in the same open position as represented in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the sight applied to a gun and adjusted for the peep sight.

The upright part a, rising a suitable distance above the base b, by which the sight is secured to the barrel 0, in a dovetail groove as at d, has the V notch e, in the top constituting the open sight, said part being beveled on the back to reduce the top to a thin edge best suited for the sight, and for bevel stop shoulders to the yoke z', and said part is preferably recessed on the'front side as at f, but this is not essential. Together with this open sight I provide another companion plate g, having the A shaped notch h, in the lower end and being mounted in the yoke Z, pivoted to the edges of the upright a, so that when said yoke is swung into the upright position, as in Figs. 1, 3 and 6, the two notches e, and h, combine to form the peep sight. I also make plate g, adjustable up and down in a slide way it, of the yoke and so that it may slide down and overlap the front side of part a, and thus serve to reduce or enlarge the orifice of the peep sight, and adapt it for various different conditions, and to the requirements of difierent persons.

To facilitate adjusting the plate 9, I provide the adjusting screw Z, having the milled head and applied as such adjusting devices are commonly arranged, but may of course employ any other approved means of adjusting it. The yoke has the lower end beveled correspondingly with the bevel rear side of the part a, as indicated at m, which stops the yoke when shifted to the upright position and the plate 9, then being shifted downward so that its lower end slightly overlaps the top of part a, locks itself and the yoke in said upright position for use. The recess f, in the front of part a, provides space allowingit and the yoke to be arranged flush with the front surface of a, but it is not essential for they may be so far in advance of the surface of part a, as will permit plate g, to overlap part a, without the recess.

I am aware of the patent to Frank W. Freund, No. 268,090, dated November 28, 1882, in which the plate having the notch in the top for the open sight has an opening through it for the peep sight below the notch of the open sight, with a sliding plate for opening and closing the peep sight and I do not claim such device, mine being distinguished from that by the open sight forming part of the peep sight, so that the elevation of the muzzle of the gun is the same whether the open sight or peep sight be used and when adjusted for the peep sight, the open sight is closed and confusion with the peep sight thereby prevented, while the open sight of the said patent remains open when the peep sight is used, and the elevation of the barrel is altered.

I claim- 1. The combined open and peep sight whereof the normal open sight forms a part, and the plate g pivotally adjustable into and out of position therewith forms the rest of the peep sight substantially as described.

2. The combined open and peep sight whereof the normal open sight forms a part, and the plate 9 pivotally adjustable into and out of position therewith formsthe rest of the peep sight, one of said parts being adjustable to vary the size of the opening of the peep sight without changing its geometrical configuration substantially as described.

3. The combination in a gun sight of the permanent open sight, and the yoke having the companion part together with said open sight forming the peep sight and pivoted to the part having the open sight substantially said open sight forming the peep sight, and r 5 pivoted to and adapted to overlap the part having the open sight, and lock the two parts together for the peep sight substantially as described.
