SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,521, dated May 2, 1893.

Be it known that I, ISAAC W. LOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashburn, in the countyof Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives for Cutting Green Tobacco; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in knives, and it relates more particularly to that class of knives which are adapted for use in cutting green tobacco.

The invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive knife of this character, so constructed as to permit its being securely attached to the fore-arm of the operator, in such a manner as to insure the knife being held securely and steadily in position when in use while the greatest possible amount of force is being applied.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of atobaccoknife embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a like view, showing the knife attached to the arm of the operator and in position for use.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the blade of the knife, which is constructed of a single sheet or plate of steel, both the upper and lower edges of the blade being sharpened. The handle of the knife is composed of the two parts B and 0, between the lower ends of which the end of the blade A is secured by means of the screws or rivets D, D. From their point of attachment with the blade, the parts B and C of the bifurcated handle curve outwardly and thence extend upward for a considerable distance, leaving a space between them sufficiently wide to ad mit the arm of the operator. A cross bar E connecting the two portions of the handle a short distance above their point of attachment to the blade, serves as ahandle, which is grasped by the person using the knife, while the upper end of the handle sections are secured to the arm, by means of a strap F passed through eyes or keepers G provided for the purpose.

The use of the knife will from the foregoing description be readily understood. It will be seen that the person using the knife will be able to exert a great amount of force to the knife when cutting either upward or downward while the position of the handle sections serves to permit them to act as braces to the arm; thus relieving the strain upon the wrist, which would otherwise be occasioned when a great amount of force was applied to the knife in cutting.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described knife, the same comprising a blade having both its upper and lower edges sharpened, a handle composed of two sections or parts the lower ends of which are attached to opposite sides of the blade at one of its ends, a cross-bar connecting the handle sections near their lower ends and adapted to be grasped by the operator, and a strap passed through eyes or keepers at the upper ends of the handle sections, and serv ing to secure the same to the arm of the operator, substantially as described.
