UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOSS, BOSSTON, TEXAS.
HAY-KNIFE.
STECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,584, dated May 29, 1883.
- Application filedMarch 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. (J. Moss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosston, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Hay-Knives; and I- do declare the following to be afull, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures frame and engaging the slot of the lever, and,
the pressure-head or cross-bar connected to the outer end of the frame, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main frame, consisting, prefferably, of two bars, B B, bent at one end to form the fork O of the frame, and at the other j to provide a slot or opening, D.
To the outer end of the frameA is attached the pressure-head or bar E, which is usually pivoted to permit the frame to he turned while the bar E is pressed against the body of the operator.
F indicates the lever, one end of which extends into the opening D, and is slotted, as indicated at G. This lever is pivoted to they bars of the main frame near their point of divergence, as indicated at H, and carries at its end the knife K, which is pivoted to said lever at its middle portion, its ends extending vibrated, operating the knife.
through slots l l of the fork-arms L L, as shown in the drawings. The cutting-edge of theknife K is usually serrated, as indicated at m. In the slotted bearings l are provided anti-friction rollers 1', which engage the rear edge of the knife, and are designed to facilitate its vibration.
P indicates the crank whereby the lever is This crank is preferably made with two handles, Z Z, so that it can be worked with both hands. The bearing end o of the crank is provided with an anti-friction roller, 8, which works in the slot G of the lever.
The fork of the frame is provided with pointed projections V, which extend beyond the cutting-edgeof the knife and serve to hold the instrument firmly in position when pressed into the rick. A transverse guide-bar, I, supports the lever near the middle of the knife.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A hay-knife having a forked frame and lever pivoted thereto, an operating-crank engaging a slotofthe lever, and a vibratory re- "ciprocating knife working through hearings in the fork-arms and pivoted to the end of the lever, substantially as specified.
2. The hay knife consisting of bent bars forming a fork-frame, a lever pivoted thereto a JOHN G. MOSS. Witnesses:
