Description

(No Model.)
A, J. MILLER. UNDERWAIST.
No. 494,300. Patnted Mar. 28,- 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE JENNESS MILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
U N DERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,300, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed May 24, 1892' Serial No. 434,155. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNIE J ENNESS MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waists, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in waists of the class worn by women and children.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure l is an inside view of the waist as spread open. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the yoke piece. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the bust form piece.
In the drawings A represents the yoke piece, cut out of a single piece of cloth with the shoulder strap a entire. It has extensions 1), which pass around under the arm where they are united by stitching. The front extensions 0, of the yoke piece form a support to which the side facings, bust forms and other pieces hereinafter described are attached. The back extensions d form a like support for the other parts of the waist. It will be understood that these yoke pieces are cut from a single piece of cloth and as the shoulder strap is cut entire, it has the full strength of the cloth without any lap or transverse seam to cause insecurity or give discomfort to the wearer, the only seam being underneath the arm where no material pressure arises from it. The two yoke pieces form the entire upper part of the garment and support the pieces constituting the lower part of the waist. On the front of the waist are the side facings E, F, the upper ends of which are stitched to the front extensions of the yoke pieces, the facing F being made larger than the other for convenience in lacing and letting out. The bust form pieces are shown at G, H, and consist of two pieces, substantially triangular, the front edges being connected to the front facings while the tops are gathered and connected to the front extensions of the yoke, the opposite sides being connected to the other parts hereinafter described. The remainder of the lower part of the front is composed of the bone pieces I and the bias pieces K. The upper ends of the bone pieces are connected to the bust form pieces, and the upper ends of the bias pieces are mainly supported by connection with the yoke pieces. The back is formed of a pair of bone pieces M, M, a central piece N and two intermediate bias pieces 0, 0, all of these pieces being connected to the yoke pieces. The central piece N is cut pointed and connected with both yoke pieces. The yoke pieces are provided with any.suit able reinforcement. The central back piece N may also be provided with bone pockets.
I claim As a new article of manufacture; a waist consisting of a yoke made up of two single pieces each having extensions 1) passing under the arm, and extensions 0 d, the lower part of the waist being supported therefrom and co mprising a central piece N conforming to the contour of the yoke pieces to which it is connected, bias and bone pieces on each side of the central piece N, facing strips, and bust form pieces gathered at their connection with the yoke pieces and connected to the facing strips and bone pieces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
