Description

E. WALTER. SASH P ASTI-INER.
Patented Sept. 30. 1 890.;
(No Model.)
' Jvwawtoz wihwwca Edward W667",
Gtbomw/g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ED\VARD WALTER, OF KEYTESVILLE, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,536, dated September 30, 1890.
Serial No. 355,640- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keytesville, in the county of Charlton, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sash looks or fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which can be readily applied and which will hold the window in any desired position and lock the same against movement in either direction.
The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction, and the combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of the window to which my fastener applies. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail at right angles to Fig. 1, with portions broken away. Fig. 3 is a face view of the lock.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring now to the detail of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of the frame, B the upper, and C the lower, sash, all of known construction, except as hereinafter specified.
D is the lock, consisting of a lever portion provided with a thumb-piece a at one end, and at the opposite end with a projecting horn or prong b, the upper face of which is curved to conform to the are upon which the same moves. Substantially centrally between its ends the lever portion is formed with a boss 0, through which and through an opening in the lever passes a screw or other analogous device d, which secures the same to the frame, said screw or fastening means (1 serving as the pivot on which the lever moves or is fulcrumed. From the rear face ,of the lever nearits prong end is a lug e, substantially L-shaped, as shown in Fig. 3, and E is a spring coiled around the boss 0, with one end formed with an eye f, and through which passes suitable securing means g to hold said end fast to the frame. The other end of the spring bears against the horizontal portion of the lug e, and serves to normally keep the prong or horn of the lever in engagement with the hole in the sash.
I provide the vertical rail of the sash with a plurality of openings h, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with which the horn of the lever is designed to engage. These openings may be made directly in the sash, as shown in Fig. 1, or a metallic face-plate F may be provided, as shown in Fig. 2, the latter being preferred, as it prevents marring of the sash.
The operation will be readily understood from the above description when taken in connection with the drawings. I sometimes provide the lever upon its edge adjacent to the sash between its thumb-piece and pivot with a lug or projection G, which serves as a brake by which I am enabled to regulate the descent of the window when the thumb end is pressed open to draw the horn from its engagement with the hole in the sash. The lock may be applied to both upper and lower sash, if desired.
What I claim as new is- The combination, with the lever formed with thumb-piece, horn, L-shaped lug, boss, and brake-lug, of a spring coiled around the boss with one end bearing against the L- shaped lug, and the'other end adapted to be secured to the frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD WALTER.
