Be it known that I, DAVID W. REED, acitizen of the United States, residing at Bearden, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Cant- I-Iook, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sleeves for cant-hooks and has for its object to avoid the use and employment of fastening means, such as bolts, which tend to weaken the connection of the sleeve with the handle, and provides means for taking up any loose movement of the sleeve on the handle owing to the seasoning of the said handle, and with this object in view, the invention consists ofthe construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the improved sleeve which is applied to a handle 2 and has integral ears 3, formed therewith, between which is pivotally mounted a cant-hook 4. The upper and lower portions 5 and 6 respectively of the sleeve, are gradually tapered toward opposite ends to increase the size of the central opening 7 at the said points for the purpose of inserting wedges 8, between the inner walls of the sleeve and the handle 2. The sleeve is also provided with an opening 9, therein at which the tapered portions set forth terminate and permit the exposed inner edges of the wedges to be readily disengaged by knocking the same loose in opposite directions as will be understood, when it is desired to release the sleeve from the handle.

ward inserted and driven home tight enough to firmly hold said sleeve in position, it being observed that by the medium of the construction set forth, the said sleeve may be adjusted very quickly and readily to any desired elevation. Should the sleeve become loose upon the handle from shrinkage or seasoning of the said handle, other wedges may be driven in place and this operation be .continued from time to time as may be found necessary and desirable.

It willbe understood in applying the sleeve, that it Will be lirst driven up tight on the handle and the wedges afterward applied. Through the medium of the opening .9,the exposed ends of the wedges may be readily engaged and loosened.

The device as a whole is simple and effective in its construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture and Sale.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is s 1. In a cant hook, the combination of a handle and a sleeve pivotally carrying a canthook proper, said sleeve having the opening therethrough at the upper and lower ends thereof increased in diameter, and wedges removably inserted in said enlarged upper and lower ends and arranged longitudinally of the handle, substantially as described.

2. In a cant-hook, the combination of a handle and a sleeve pivotally carrying a cant hook proper, said sleeve having the opening therethrough at the upper and lower ends thereof increased in diameter for the purpose of receiving wedges and having an opening in the body thereof to expose the inner ends of the wedges so that the said wedges may be readily loosened, substantially as described.
