WHEEL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,342, dated December 20, 1892.
Application filed July 6, 1892. Serial No. 439,151. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. W'ILKINS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Vheel Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toys of that class having a figure, form, or vehicle, usually mounted upon wheels and provided with a gong, or bell, which is rung or sounded during the rotation of the carrying wheels.
The object of my improvement is to provide a simple and effective device for ringing the gong continuously, the ringing mechanism being so arranged and protected as to avoid danger of breakage or disarrangement.
The improvement is fully described in connection with the drawings and the novel' features are specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a toy embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a central sectional View.
A represents the floor or frame of a vehicle which I will employ to illustrate my invention, although it will be understood that the style of the vehicle itself forms no part of my improvement. The wheels B B are carried by a transverse axle, C, to which the wheels are rigidly secured so that the axle rotates in the bearings, D, on the frame. The gong, E, is attached to the under side of the frame in any preferred manner, in this case in rear of the axle. To the under side of the frame, at right angles to the axle, is arranged a guideplate, F, provided at its ends with guide-eyes, G G, in which is mounted, for longitudinal movement, the striking pin, H. The striking pin is provided at an intermediate point, be-
tween the guide-eyes, with a collar or proj ection,K, and between said collar or projection and the guide-eyes, are arranged, respectively, the impulse spring, L, and the retraction spring, M. As the wheels rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, the collar or projection upon the striking pin is engaged successively by the opposite ends of the cross-head, N, carried by the axle, and drawn back against the expansion of the impulse spring. After the striking pin has been drawn back and has been released by the cross-head it is projected forwardly by the impulse spring, thus striking the gong, and is immediately retracted a sufficient distance to allow the gong to emit a clear ringing sound, by the retraction spring, M, above mentioned. The striking pin is held from lateral play by the guide eyes, and is spring-actuated to give the gong a short quick stroke, as described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A wheeled toy having a gong or bell, the axle connecting the wheels being provided with a cross-head, the striking-pin mounted in guides in position to strike said going or bell, and springs attached to the striking pin, substantially as specied.
2. A wheeled toy having a gong or bell, and a cross-head carried by its axle, the strikingpin mounted in guide-eyes, the impulse spring and retraction spring, arranged substantially as specified.
