To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT AUGUST STEIN- ERT, of Washburn, in the county of Bayfield and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented a new and Improved Gun, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved gun which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to securely lock the cartridge in place for firing and at the same time actuate the firing-pin.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 in Figs. 2 and 5. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4 4in Fig. 6. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied with the breech-block in a lowermost position and the cartridge loader and extractor withdrawn, the section being taken on the line 5 5 in Fig. 7. Fig. 6 isasimilar view of the same with the breech-block closed and the cartridge loader and extractor in an up permost position, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the improvement shown in Fig. 5.
In the breech A of the gun is formed a vertically-extending recess B, formed with guideways B, in which is fitted to slide vertically the breech-block C, formed on its top with a semicircular recess D for the reception of the cartridge E to be pushed into the bore of the barrel F. When the breech-block C is in a lowermost position and a cartridge is thrown into the open end of the recess B, the cartridge falls into the said semicircular recess D, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 5, and is then in alignment with the bore of the barrel F.
From one side of the breech-block C extends outward a stud C, passing through a vertical slot A, formed in one side of the breeclr'A. (See Fig.1.) The outer end of the stud C engages a slot formed in the arm G of abellcrank lever G, fulcrumed on a stud G secured in the side of the breech A. The other arm G8 of the bell-crank lever G extends upward and forms a handle to permit the operator to conveniently actnate the said bellcrank lever to raise and lower the breechblock.C. When the bell-crank lever G is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the breech-block C rests in the bottom of the recess B in the breech A, and when the arm G of the said bell-crank lever is thrown rearward the breech-block C is caused to slide upward in the guideways B in the recess B. The front end of the breeck-block G then engages the flanged end of the cartridge, so as to lock the latter in place in the bore of the barrel F.
On the top of the breech A are arranged horizontally-extending guideways H, in which is fitted to slide a plate I, adapted to open and close the recess B at the upper end thereof. On the rear end of the plate I is formed a knob or handle I for conveniently manipulating the said plate, and on the front end of the latter is arranged a stop 1 adapted to abut against a stop-pin 1 secured on the breech A, near the rear end thereof, so as to limit the outward-sliding motion of the plate I. On the under side of the plate I and near the middle of the same is arranged a cartridge pushing and extracting device J, pro vided with a fixed arm J, extending downward and formed with a forwardly-extending lug J adapted to engage the outer face of the flange of the cartridge, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 5. A second arm J 3 is arranged in front of the arm J 2 and is held on the free end of a spring J attached to the under side of the plate I. On the lower end of the spring-supported arm J 3 is formed an inclined foot or projection J adapted to engage with its back the inner edge of the flange of the cartridge opposite the lug or foot J The inclined part of the foot J permits the arm J 3 to move upward atthe time the cartridge moves into proper position in the bore of the barrel F, so as to finally pass over the flange of the cartridge to engage the IOC In the breech-block O is formed a recess or.

In order to prevent the firing-pin K from turning in its bearing in the breech-block, a groove K is out longitudinally in the top of the said pin and is engaged by the lower end of the set-screw L, screwing in the breechblock 0. On the under side of the firing-pin K are formed two recesses or notches K and K of which the outermost notch K is engaged by the free end of a spring N, secured to the under side of the breech-block, the said spring serving for projecting the pin, as hereinafter more fully described. When the breech-block is in a lowermost position, the front end of the firing-pin K rests against an inclined lug B formed vertically in the recess B and in line with the bore of the barrel F. (See Figs. 5, 6, and 7.) When the breechblock C moves downward, the firing-pin K travels over the inclined lug B whereby the firing-pin is pressed rearward and its spring N is compressed.
In order to unlock the firing-pin Kfor projection by the force of the spring N, the fol- (See lowing device is provided: The catch K of the firing-pin is adapted to be engaged by a ridge 0', formed on top of a lever O, extending transversely in the breech-block C and pivoted thereto at 0 as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. Aspring 0 held in the breech-block, presses against theunder side of the said lever 0, so as to move the latter upward to engage the ridge 0 with the notch K. On the free end of the lever O rests a vertically-extending pin P, mounted to slide loosely in the breech-block C, the upper end of the said pin being adapted to be engaged by a lug Q, projecting from a slide Q, mounted to slide longitudinally in the top of the breech A at one side thereof. On the slide Q is formed a laterally-projecting knob or handle Q for conveniently moving the slide Q" forward or backward, so as to move the lug Q into or out of the path of the free end of the pin P. A spring Q pressing on the knob or handle Q serves to lock the slide Q in either a forward or backward position. Now when the slide Q has been moved rearward then the lug Q is directly above the upper end of the pin 1, and when the breechblock 0 is lifted, as before described, then the said pin P moves in contact with the lug Q,
is consequently pressed, and on account of resting on the lever 0 causes a downward swinging of the latter to move the ridge 0' below the firing-pin K, so that the latter is free to slide in its bearing in the breech-block O to fire the cartridge in the usual manner. #When the slide Q is in a forward position, then the lug Q is out of the path of the pin P, and when the breech-block O is lifted then the ridge 0' remains in the notch K thus locking the firing-pin K in place and preventing its outward sliding.
It is understood that when the lug Q presses the pin P, as above described, to free the firing-pin K to permit of firing the cartridge then on the downward motion of the breechblock 0 the firing-pin is moved into a rearmost position by traveling over the inclined lug B As the breeclrblock O descends, the pin P moves away from the lug Q and the spring 0 causes an upward sliding motion of the lever 0, so as to bring the ridge 0 in contact with the under side of the firing-pin K. Now when the latter slides rearward by traveling down the inclined lug B the ridge 0' finally snaps into the notch K and holds the firing-pin in position. It is understood that the firing-pin remains in this locked position until the breechrblock O is nearing its uppermost position, and the firing-pin is released by the lever O swinging downward, this being caused by the pin P engaging the lug Q.
It is understood that the spring N is made sufficiently strong so as to push the firingpin K forward with sufficient force to fire the cartridge.
The operation is as follows: When the breech-block O is in alowermost position and the plate I is in a rearmost position, as shown in Fig. 5, then the operator places the cartridge E in the recess B so that the cartridge rests on the semicircular recess D in the top of the breech-block O. The operator then takes hold of the knob I of the plate I and pushes the same forward, so that the loading and cartridge-extracting device J pushes on the rear end of the cartridge E, so that the latter slides off the breech-block into the bore of the barrel F. When the flange of the cartridge abuts against its recess in the end of the barrel, the operator moves the plate I still farther forward. Then the incline of the foot J 5 of the spring-supported arm J 3 slides over the flange of the cartridge and engages the same at the front edge opposite the lug J (See Fig. 6.) The cartridge loading and extracting device is then in position to withdraw the empty shell after firing. After the cartridge is in place the operator pulls the arm G of the bell-crank leverG rearward, so as to raise the breech-block C in the recess 13, andin doingsothefrontendofthebreech-block passes against the end of the cartridge, and when the said breech-block nears its uppermost position the firing-pin K is released by the lever O sliding downward, as before explained, after which the spring N forces the firing-pin K forward, thus firing the cartridge. The operator then swings the arm G forward to lower the breech-block 0, whereby the firing-pin K is again set by the ridge 0' of the spring-pressed lever O engaging the notch K The spring N is at the same time compressed by the firing-pin K sliding rearward in passing down over the inclined lug B \Vhen the breech-block G is in the lowermost position, the operator pulls on the knob I, so as to move the plate I rearward, whereby the cartridge loading and extracting device J withdraws the cartridge as the two arms J and J engage the flange of the cartridge, as before described. The plate I is drawn rearward with a jerk, so that the stop 1 in striking on the pin 1 gives sufficient jerk to the spring J so that the cartridge drops out between the lug J and foot J of the arms J and J respectively. A new cartridge is then placed in the open recess B and the abovedescribed operation is repeated.
When it is desired not to fire but to load the cartridge into the barrel, then the slide Q is moved forward, so as to move the lug Qout of the path of the pin P. When the breechblock is then raised, the firing-pin K is not unlocked, as the lever O is not depressed, and consequently the firing-pin K remains locked.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the breech having a transverse recess through it, of a sliding breech-block mounted in said recess, a springprojected firing pin mounted in the said block, a detent or sear to engage the firingpin and hold it retracted, a cam or incline on the breech in the downward path of the firing-pin to retract it, and a releaser for the firing-pin to release its sear or detent when the breech-block reaches its inner or closed position and adapted, also, to be moved into an inactive position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a breech-block and its spring-projected firing-pin having a notch in its lower side, of at-ransverse springactuated lever or detent to snap into the notch when the firing-pin is retracted and a vertically-extending pin resting at its lower end on said lever or detent to disengage it from the notch when pressed downwardly, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the breech and the sliding breech-block carrying the springprojected firing-pin and its locking-lever or detent, of an incline on the breech in the path of the firing-pin when the block is moved downward to retract the said pin and a releasing mechanism for the said locking-lever or detent, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the breech and the breechblock therein provided with a spring-projected firing-pin, a detent or lever to lock the pin when retracted, and a releasing-pin, of a ing mounted movably on the breech and having afinger-piecefor throwing it into and out of the path .of the releasingpin, substantially as set forth.
'5. In a device of the. class described, the combination, with a breech-block mounted to slide, of a spring-pressed firing-pin held in the said breech-block, a lever for locking the said firing-pin in position, a pin engaging the said lever and held with the latter in the said breech-block, and a lug held on the stock and adapted to engage the said pin at the time the breech-block slides in position for the firing-pin to engage the cartridge, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a breech-block mounted to slide, of a spring-pressed firing-pin fitted to slide in the said breech-block, a spring-pressed lever held in the said breech-block and adapted to engage the said firing-pin, and a fixed inclined lug adapted to engage the said firingpin on the downward movement of the said breech-block to move the said firing-pin rearward in engagement with the said springpressed lever, substantially as shown and de scribed.
7. In a device of the class described, a cartridge loader and extractor comprising a plate fitted to slide on the breech, a fixed arm on the said plate, and a spring-supported arm arranged in front of the said fixed arm, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a device of the class described, a cartridge loader and extractor comprising a'plate fitted to slide on the breech, a fixed arm on the said plate, and a spring-supported arm arranged in front of the said fixed arm, the said spring-supported arm being provided at its foot with an inclined front edge to pass over the flange of the cartridge, substantially as shown and described.
9. The combination, with the breech having a recess open at its top and a portion of its rear end and a breech-block sliding vertically in the recess and having a cartridge-groove in its upper face, of a slide over the upper open end of said recess and provided. with a depending arm to push the cartridge forward from the block into the barrel, substantially .as set forth.
