Barton, dated June 18,1901, and numbered 676,809.` In describing my present improvements I shall follow substantiallythe language employed in the aforesaid patent so far as the sameis appropriate and addto the same a description ofmy present improvements and modifications, and the claims hereto appended'v'vill also indicate and define the several features of novelty. e

The adjustability of' the wedge-shaped shoulder permits compensation for wear, and therefore a close fit of the breech of the barrel against the breechblock, as will presently appear. The cross-grooves a8 and a9 are adapted to operate in connection with a lock or latch to hold the barrel in its closed position and to limit its movement in opening and closing. The lock or device for holding the barrel consists of a perforated plate am, that extends downwardly around the magazine and is adapted to be pressed upwardly by the springs all. The opening through this plate is elongated, so that it may move up or down on the magazine. Thegripand its projecting cam are so positioned with reference to the barrel that the cam passes o ver the arm @15j ust before the barrel is closed. When the barrel is closed, the arm a15 stands forward of the cam-face f5, with the handle orgrip moved to the rear. The springs all thus move the latch-plate al until the edge Q12 thereof engages the cross-groove d", and thus firmly locks the barrel against the breech-block. As the barrel is vopened the cam-latch als will be turned out of` the way, so as not to operate the magazine-stop until the barrel is again closed, the spring-latch having as soon as it has passed the projection b5 returned to its normal position across the groove a5 and in position to strike and operate said projection and magazine-latch when the barrel is closed again.
As in the former patent herein referred to, the cartridge or shell carrier e consists of' a. U-shaped frame mounted ou the end of a spring-pressed lever e', the lever being preferably provided with an extended finger e2, that tits in the roundopening e3 in the bottoin of' the carrier, so that the carrier is pivoted on the arm. The finger eis also preferably pivoted on the end of the arm ef, as shown at e4, and thus a universal connection is established between the spring-actuated lever e'and the U-shaped frame of the carrier. The arm e extends rearvt'a'rd through an opening below the breech-block and is pivcted at e5 under the firing mechanism, a spring e, placed between the frame and the level', normally tending to throw the forward end of the arm and the carrier upward. The forward edges of the carrier are beveled and adapted to be engaged by the breech end `of the barrel when being closed to force the carrier downward into the chamber d behind the magazine. The inner side of the carrier can be provided with a small spring-actuated linger e7, the upper end of' which is normally pressed inward, so as to lightly hold the shell therein. When the carrier is depressed, a small inward projection e8 in the` Wall of the chamber d will force the upper end of the finger e7 outward, so that it will lie flush with the side of' the carrierand not preventingress of a shell from the magazine. The sides of' the chamber d are also preferably recessed, as shown ard', to receive the sides of' the carrier. In the present instance the carrier is further provided in one of its walls (made shorter than'the other) with an' inwardly-extending .linger elllheld to normally project over the cavity of the carrier by means'of a spring e, pressing against a corresponding IOO IIO

The lower finger cl2 is operated by the inner end of a pin cl3, the forward end of which protrudes beyond the. forwardend of the carrier and is pushed inward by the barrel when the latter is closed to release the carrier from the shell. vThe carrier-finger ew not only holds down the cartridge or shell when the barrelis closed thereon to load, but also serves as a device to strike the discharged shell and eject the same when the carrier is thrown up to load. In the present instance the carrier is also provided with a supplementary bottom piece e, hinged at e15 in the forward'end of the carrierand .pressed normally upward by a spring e1G. The rear end of the supplementary bott-om e engages the rim of the cartridge to prevent it from moving forward when the gun is discharged. In the rear end of the bottom of` the carrier is a notched stop and rest e, that limits the entrance of the shell to the carrier and affords a seat for the lower side of the rim of the shell.
At each side of the breech-block, fitted in suitable recesses therefor, are small springactuated blocks, constituting eXtractors c2, pivoted at points therein forward of their rimengaging ends,`s`uch engaging ends being of beveled hook shape and adapted to engage and hold the rim of thefcartridge orvshell, and the barrel is notched out at each side to receive the spring-actuated extractorsand the construction is such that a shell or cartridge being in the carrier and the barrel closed the carrier will as the barrel is opened force the shell or cartridge npwardpwith the rim of the shell resting 'firmly agains-t the Y breech-block andengaged by the extractors, f the shell being held by the finger e7 and the turning theiinger elo out of thel way;

The operation of the gun, which can also be gathered from thedescription ot' its several parts, is as follows: The gun is opened and the magazine filled with a number of shells or cartridges. If desired, a shell can be placed in the carrier and one in thebarrel, the carrier, with the shell or cartridge therein, being pressed down, so as to permit the barrel to be closed. After the gun has been tired the outward movement ot' the grip or handle will unlock the barrel, and a further movement of the handle will carry the barrel and cookingarm forward. The shell or cartridge being engaged by the extractors c2 will be extracted from the barrel and held on the breech-block. As soon as the barrel and cocking-arm are sufficiently far forward the spring-actuated arm e will throwthe carrier e upward, and the finger em, while retaining the charged shell, will strike the empty shell or cartridge and force the latter vertically oiI" the breechblock. When the barrel is again closed, a fresh shell or cartridge runs into the barrel, with the rim engaged by the extractors c2, and the carrier will be again pressed down into its place in the rear of the magazine and in position to receive another charged shell or cartridge.
In the drawings I have illustrated my improvements as applied to a shotgun; but obviously the improvements are equally applicable to a ride.
`What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. In a tirea1m,the combination ofa breechblock frame, a sliding barrel thereon and a sliding grip, a slotted tongue on the under side of the barrel and a metallic piece seated in the sliding grip having an elongated recess to receive the slotted tongue, and a pin en'- gaging the metallic piece and passing through the slot of the tongue to connect the grip and barrel, said slot being of such length that the thrust of the grip on the barrel shall be borne by the contact of the ends of the tongue and recess in the metallic piece and not by the connecting-pin.
2. The combination of the breech block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in t-he breechblock frame under'the breech of the barrel in the rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the carrier, a spring-actuated finger in said carrier to project inward over the upper end of the carrier when the barrel is opened and means actuated by the end of the barrel to turn said finger out of said position when the barrelis closed,substantially as described.
3. The combination ofabreech-blockframe, a sliding barrel thereon, a chamber in the breech-block frame under the breech of the barrel to receive a cartridge or shell carrier, the carrier, a movable finger in said carrier,
means to hold said finger to project inward over the upper end of said carrier when the barrel is opened and means actuated by the barrel to turn said finger out of said position when the barrel is closed.
1. The combination of the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the breech of the barrel and in rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the carrier and a spring-actuated movable bottom in the carrier.
5. The combination ot' the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the barrel, and in rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the
carrier, and a spring-actuated movable bottom in said carrier hinged at its forward end to the forward end of the carrier and adapted to engage the rim of the shell to hold said shell in the carrier.
6. The combination ot' the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the breech of the barrel and in rear of the magazine, the carrier, a cockiugrod actuated when the barrel is opened and closed, a projection on said cocking-rod adapted to engage said carrier to hold the same when in the chamber and to release the same when the barrel has been opened a predetermined distance, substantially as described.
7. In a firearm the combination of a breechblock frame having a breech-block, a barrel sliding on the breech-block frame toward and from the breech-block, and shell-extractors in the sides of the Vbreech-block and in line with the barrel consisting of small blocks having rim-engaging rear ends and pivoted at their forward ends and springs for holding the rim-engaging ends inward toward each other, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the breech-block frame, a sliding-barrel thereon, a spring-actuated latch to limit the forward movement of the same, a magazine under the barrel havinga catch, and a finger-piece on the breech-block frame engaging both the barrellatch and magazine-catch and adapted to be operated to simultaneously release the barrel and magazine from the breech-block frame.
9. In a firearm the combination of the breech-block frame and breech-block, a barrel sliding on the breech-block frame, ashell or cartridge carrier, spring-actuated extractors in the sides of the breech-block, to catch and hold the sides of the rim of the shell when the latter is pushed rearwardly on the carrier by the barrel, and a spring-protruded seat in the breech-block constructed to support the shell at the lower edge of its rim, substantially as described.
