STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,736, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed September 28, 1891' Serial No. 407,061- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitt-sburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do herebydeclare the following to be afull, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved stea mboiler; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central side sectional elevation of my improved steam-boiler which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of the same, taken at the rear of the bridge-wall on the line X X. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the front head, showing the position of the man-heads.
To construct a steam-boiler in accordance with my invention, I provide a cylindrical tube 1 of a large diameter and of a suitable length and connect each end of the same to afront and rear chamber 2 and 3. These chambers 2 and 3 are cylindrical in cross-section and are provided with convex heads l and inner flanged plates 5 and the said plates attached to the above-described tube 1 above the center. Each of these chambers 2 and 3 is provided with man-heads 6 for the purpose of cleaning the boiler. Beneath this tube 1 and connected to the inner flanged plate of each chamber 2 and 3 is a series of tubes 8, which are exposed to the fire. Arranged in thefront chamber 2 and above the water-line is an imperforate plate ordeflector 9, one end of which is secured to the outer Wall of the chamber 2 below the top thereof, from which point it extends incliningly over the mouth of the exit-pipe 10 toward the tube 1, so that the steam generated in the front chamber is caused to travel around the inner edge of the deflector before entering the steamoutlet pipe 10.
This boiler, constructed as described,i s arranged in a suitable setting in an inclined position, being elevated at the front and the rear brought to within a short distance of the general level of the setting, and the said setting consisting of the two outside Walls 11 to inclose and support the boiler, a fire-chamber 12, and bridge-Wall 13. The grate-bars 14 are also arranged in an inclined position corresponding in inclination to the boiler above described. The location of the man-heads in the front chamber2 is such that all the small water-tubes 8 may be cleaned, repaired, or replaced from the front of the boiler. Located within thelarge tube 1 is aconical-shaped water-filter 15, having an open front end arranged slightly below the water-level. At the rear end of this filter 15 is connecteda pipe 16, which leads out of the boiler through the rear wall of the setting and is provided with a valve or cook (not shown) of ordinary construction. The feed-water pipe 17 enters this'filter 15 at the front or largest end, and any sediment or heavy substance will settle in the exit-pipe 16 and may be removed therefrom by opening the said valve at the outer end of the pipe 16. The position and construction of this filter 15 are such that the same may be used as a surface blow-01f, and will be found useful for this purpose when the surface of the Water becomes covered with froth or vegetable matter.
By the use of this steam-boiler a large amount of surface is exposed to the tire, therefore saving fuel and generating steam quickly.
The general construction and arrangement of this steam boiler may be altered and changed. Therefore I do-not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described. The chambers may beinade triangular or oval in cross-section in place of cylindrical, as above described, without departing from the spirit of-my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A steam-boiler consisting of the chambers located at each end, the front chamber having an exit-pipe leading from its top, a pipe or tube connecting the said chambers above the centers, a series of small tubes or pipes connecting the chambers beneath the said tube, and a deflector in the front chamclined, said boiler having chambers at each end and pipes connecting said chambers, a portion of which pipes is exposed directly to the fire, the front chamber having an exitpipe and a deflector, said deflector consisting of an imperforate plate secured at one e'ndto the outer wall of the chamber below the top thereof, but above the waterline, and extending thence incliningly to a pointbeneath and beyond the mouth of the exit-pipe, said deflector thereby compelling the steam to travel around its innermost edge on its way to the exit-pipe.
