PORTABLE STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,073, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed May 19, 1888.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD H. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Portable Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements in portable steam-boilers hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the acconr panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a frontend elevation of my improved portable steanrboiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same through the centerthereof. Fig. 8 is a cross-section of same on the line a: a: in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.

The objects of my invention are, first, to construct a portable steam-boiler with a circular fire-box inclosed within the body of the boiler in such shape as to avoid stay-bolting and bracing it, as in boilers of this class having rectangularfire-boxes; second, to construct the rear head of the ire-box and the rear head of the boiler of substantially the same size and with a suiiicientnumber of fines therein to amply stay and support them, and thus avoid the necessity of braces and stay-bolts necessarily used in boilers of the ordinary construclion; third, to construct the portion of said boiler-shell surrounding the fire-box oval in shape and that portion of the boilershell from the rear end of the firebox to the rear head of the boiler tapering from the fire-box to the rear head.
In the construction of my improved portable steam-boiler shown, A is the portion of the boiler-shell surrounding the fire-box B, which I make oval in shape with the vertical diameter thereof greatest. \Vithin the shell A is placed a cylindrical fire-box, B, the front end of which is securely riveted to the front boilerhcad, C, and the rear end of which is provided Serial No. 274,405.

with a flue-head, D, securely riveted therein, the location of the fire-box B in the shell A being near the bottom E thereof, so that between the top F of the firebox and the top of the shell A there is ample water and steam space. Within the portion A of the shell above the water-line G, I preferably place a dry steam-pipe, H, which communicates with the steam-outlet I of the boiler. The front end of the firebox B, I close with acircular cast-iron front, J, provided with a fire-door, K, and ashdoor L. From the bottom of the inner end of the firedoor opening M is a downwardly-projecting horizontal ledge, N, upon which the front ends of the gratebars 0 rest, the rear ends of the grate-bars resting upon an angular rear plate, P, adapted to operate as a stop at the rear end of the gratebars and prevent the fuel from coming into contact with the flue plate or head D and obstructing the lower tiers of the fines Q, the ends of this plate P resting upon and being supported by the curved sides of the fire-box B. The plate P is also provided with small air-openings, 1), through which air is supplied from the ash-pit to the gases as they pass into the fines Q. The lines Q are put in in parallel tiers and extend from the rear head or flue-plate, D, of the fire-box B to and through the rear head, R, of the boiler, this head being 'of substantially the same diameter as the plate D, forming the rear end of the firebox. From the rear end of the portion A of the boiler-shell to the rear head, It, thereof the shell S of the boiler tapers, until at the head B it is of the same size as the head It, which is circular.
In constructing the boiler I preferably slope the top portion, T, of the shell about twice as much as I do the bottom portion, T, thus leaving room in the lower part of the rear head for a hand-hole, R, (shown in dotted lines) under the lower tier of the dues Q, the bottom of the shell T being sufficiently sloping to drain the sediment accumulating therein toward the front end of the boiler, where it is ordinarily blown off. To the rear head, R, I secure a breeching, (2, having a door, e, in the rear end thereof, and a chininey-thiinble, f, of .usual and ordinary construct-ion.
It will be observed that the normal waterline G does not reach to the rear head of the boiler, but strikes the upper portion, T, of the boiler-shell some distance therefrom, so that the steamspace' of the boiler is at the front part thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination, in a portable steamboiler shell, of an oval section surrounding the fire-box with a section tapering from the rear end of said fire-box section to the rear head of the boiler, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a portable steamboiler, ofashell consisting of an oval front and a tapering rear section with a circular firebox inclosed within the oval section, the rear end of said firebox consisting of a flue-sheet of substantially the same size as the rear boilerhead, and parallel fines connecting said firebox flue-sheet with the rear boiler-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a portable steamboiler, of a shell consisting of an oval front section and a front head therein having a circular opening the full size of and in which the front end of the fire-box is riveted, and a tapering rear section having a flue-sheet head riveted therein of substantially the same diameter as the circular fire-box, with parallel fiues connecting the rear end of the fire-box with the rear head of the boiler, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
