A ATTORNEY/U UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. SWEET, 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
POOL-BALL FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,562, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed March 25,1892. Serial No. 426,349- (llo model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SWEET, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pool-Ball Frames, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to frames used in setting up the balls in the game of pyramid pool, as played upon a billiard-table.
My object is to produce a frame for setting up the balls, which is in the nature of an improvement upon the one patented by me December 8, 1891, No. 464,745, consisting principally in thatin this construction means are provided for exerting separate pressure upon each of the balls of the rear row, such pressure being also exerted simultaneously upon all of them, whereby I am enabled to set them up so that all of the balls are in close contact with each other, even though they may vary somewhat in size.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a top plan of the frame and ing the detail construction. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the rear frame-bar on line 00 m in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one corner of the frame, showing its leg and ball support.
The frame proper consists of the side rails a, and the rear rail or cross-bar 17, arranged in the form of an equilateral triangle, and, if desired, the side rails may be provided with rearward extensions a',connected by a rail-bar b. When so enlarged, the rail-bar is provided with a central index or pointer 19", which when said bar is placed against the cushion with the index in line with the central diamond in the cushion-rail will bring the front ball of the pyramid exactly upon the spot. The cross-bar consists of a bar recessed longitudinally, as at c, and a cross-plate c, and both said bar and plate are perforated to receive the pressure-plungers d. Each of these plungers consists of a body and tenon, and springs d are placed around the tenons between said body and plate 0'. This bar is also mortised longitudinally, as at e, and the side rails likewise, to receive the finger-bar m, inserted through the cross bar I) and through mortises m in the plungers, so that by retracting said bar an all of the plungers can be also retracted simultaneously to release the frame from the balls. The side rails and cross bars are secured together with wood blocks and screws n, as are also the extensions ct and the rail 1).
It will be readily seen that each of the plungers exerts a separate and independent pressure upon the ball with which it is in contact, and that they together exert a simultaneous pressure upon all of the balls in the pyramid, and that by this joint and several pressure all of the variations in the size of the balls are taken up, and all of them are brought into close contact and set up tight.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the side rails and cross-bars connecting them, of pressure-plungers mounted in the cross-bar.
2. The combination, with the side rails and cross-bar connecting them, of pressure-plungers mounted in said bar and exerting ajoint and several pressure upon the balls in the frame.
3. The combination, with the side rails and cross-bar connectingthem and the pressureplungers mounted in said bar, of a finger-bar engaging with said plungers and adapted to retract them simultaneously.
4. In a pool-ball frame, the combination, with the crossbar, of horizontally-reciprocating pressure-plungers mounted therein.
5. In a pool-ball frame, the combination, with the cross-bar, of horizontally-reciprocat ing independently-acting pressure-plungers mounted therein.
6. In a pool-ball frame, the combination, with the cross-bar, of horizontaily-reciprocating independently-acting pressure-plungers mounted therein and means to retract them simultaneously.
7. The independent plungers mounted in the frame, each bearing independently against its ball in the rear row of the pyramid and all adapted to be simultaneously retracted from the balls to release the frame [0 from the pyramid.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of March, 1892.
WM. A. SWEET.
In presence of- C. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENISON.
