LOUIS WEINMAN, OF ATCHISON, KANSAS.
BARREL-HEADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed April 6, 1910. Serial No. 553,787.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS VEINMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Headers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of coopering and has particular reference to an improvement in barrel-heading devices.
To this end the invention has in view an improvementapplicable to the old and regular form of barrel headers, and comprises means for materially strengthening and reinforcing the entire structure, while at the same time positively holding the clamp piece against rotation during the pressing down operation, thus preventing the swivel joint between the clamping screw and the clamp piece from working loose.
Vith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear to those familiar with this art as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a barrel-heading device embodying the im provement contemplated by the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the two figures of the drawing.
The barrel-heading device proper includes in its organization a supporting frame essentially consisting of a main transverse frame-bar l and the opposite side holding legs 2 rigidly connected at one end, as at 3, respectively to opposite ends of the frame bar 1, and provided at their free ends with the engaging hooks 4 to engage the barrel being headed.
Associated with the supporting frame is a vertically movable clamp-piece 5, usually in the form of a cross-bar, and to the central part of which clamp-piece the clamping screw 6 has a swiveled or equivalent connection as at 7, this usually being in the form of a ball and socket joint, as shown. The clamping screw 6 turns in the nut 8 fitted in the frame bar 1 and carried by the nutplate 9 bolted or otherwise fastened to one side of the frame bar, and the upper end of the clamping screw carries the usual crossbar handle 10.
According to the present invention, a pair of brace rods 11, 11 is associated with the screw 6 and the clamp-piece 5. These rods are arranged respectively upon opposite sides of the screw 6 in spaced parallel relation thereto, slidably work through guide openings 12 in the frame-bar 1, and have their lower ends bolted or otherwise suitably secured as at 13 to the clamp-piece 5 upon opposite sides of the swivel joint 7. The upper ends of the rods 11 are connected as at 14 to diametrically opposite portions of a supporting plate 15 having a swivel connection as at- 16 with the clamping screw near the upper end thereof. It will thus be seen that the said brace rods 11 strengthen and reinforce the entire structure and at the same time positively hold the clamp piece against rotation during the pressing down operation.
In a barrel-heading device, the supporting frame having a frame-bar carrying a nut, the vertically movable clamp piece, a clamp ing screw working through said nut and swiveled to the clamp-piece, a supporting plate having a swiveled connection with the clamp-screw, and a pair of brace rods connected with said supporting plate at one end and at their other ends rigidly connected with the clamp-piece upon opposite sides of the swivel connection between the same and the screw, said brace rods slidably working through the frame-bar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS WEINMAN.
