GARM ENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,988,
dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed December 24,1891 fierlal No. 416,039. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern;
Be it known that'I, FRANCIS E. BENNETT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, re-
siding in the city and county of Philadelphia,
State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, which improvementis fully 'set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a garment-fastener of the order of a hook and eye having amember formed of a shank with a throat at the rear thereof, said throat being opened by the insertion of the shank of the opposite member and then closing, so as to prevent improper withdrawal of the same.
Figure 1 represents a" plan View of a garment-fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a modification thereof. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of another modification thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate. corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring-to the drawings, A and B designate the members of a garment-fastener embodying my invention.
The member A consists of the U-shaped shank C, the rear end of which diverges or widens, as at C, and terminates in the eyes D, by which the member may be attached to a garment, &c.
E designates jaws, which are continuous of the eyes D, the same extending forwardly or toward the bend of the shank O and approaching each of the shank, as in Figs. 1 and'2, thus closing the entrance to the space between the shank proper. i I
In Fig. 3 there is a single jaw, the same approaching the opposite portion 0 of the shank and producing results similar to that in the other figures, it being noticed that elastic in its nature and the several parts of the members are formed of suitable wire.
'- The member B consists of the shank F, the
cross-hea PG at thegfront end thereof, and
the attaching-eyes Hat the rear end thereof,
' said parts being formed of a continuous piece 'wider than the transverse space of wire, it being noticed that the head G .is between the other within the portions 0' side pieces of the shank, as most plainly indicated-in Fig. 2. r
The operation is as follows: The member 13' is placed over the member. A, so that the shank is presented to the place of contact of the jaws E E, as at J, Figs. 1 and 2, or the place of contact of the jaw E and portion 0' of the shank O, as at J Fig. 3. The shank is then pressed into said place, whereby both jaws separate in Figs. 1 and 2,01 the single part separates from the portion 0, as in Fig.
3, the shank C also yielding in a measure, so that theopening of the jaws of jaw is eased. This produces an open throat between the respective parts and permits the shank B to enter the space between the side pieces of the shank O and the head G to pass between said pieces and ride along the same until it isrestrained by .the bend of said shank (J,
I whereby asthe head is unable to pass beyond said bend and is thus controlled by the same the" members A and B are interlocked and the. garment to which they are attached is securely fastened.- As the threat is again closed by the returning jaws or jaw, the head G is guarded and prevented from disconnection, the parts being reliably held together.
I When the garment is to be unfas'tened, the member B is pressed toward the member A,
so that the throat is again opened and the shank F emergesfrom the jaws 0r jaw E, the
head thus being removed from the member A,
and the member B fully detached from the latter. p
In Figs. 1 and 3 the bend of the shank C is shown as provided with a coil forming a spring thereat, whereby the' resiliency of the member is increased. I I
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment-fastener consisting of twomembers, each composed of a single piece of material, one havinga double shank and an eye and a spring-j aw formed of a continuation of one side of the shank, the said eye being formed intermediate of said. shank and jaw and the said jaw being adapted to close a threat at the entrance between the side of the shank, and the other member having a single shank" adapted to. enter said throat and a head of greater'width than the distance between the sides of the shank of the other member, substantially as described. V
2. A garment-fastener consisting of two members, each composed of a single piece of material, one of said members havinga double shank and jaws, the latter closing on each other, forming a throat, and eyes at the con" necticn of the jaws and shank, and the other member having-a shank adapted to enter said 10 throat and a head of greater width than the distance between the sides of the shank of the other member, said parts being combined sub- JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, A. P. JENNINGS.
