To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA B. EOKHART, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hat-Pin Protector, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful hat pin protector and consists in providing a device, which is adapted to be secured upon the pointed end of a hat pin, in order to protect the same, and also to prevent accidental withdrawal or loss of the pin.

It further consists of a novel construction of a spring providing gripping jaws with a suitable amount of tension in order to grasp and firmly hold the pin.

It further consists in providing an elastic member situatedat a suitable point with respect to the jaws, in order that the end of the pin will enter said elastic member in order to assist in holding the said protector in position.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, sucl? detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

Figure 1 represents a partial side eleva tion, partial sectional view of a hat pin and protector thereon. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view on line 00-m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a form of spring employed. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the elastic member. Fig. 5 represents a plan view thereof.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a hat pin having a suitable head 2 thereon,v and a suitable pointed end 3.

4 designates the protector which may be of any suitable shape or size, and which is formed of a casing 5 having the inturned portion 6 with the opening 7 therein, said inturned portion forming a suitable guide for directing the pin to the opening.

8 designates a spring formed with a bottom piece 9 and having the two side members 10 and 11 which converge and meet at a suitable point, preferably adjacent the opening 7, and at the meeting point the said members form gripping jaws 12. The ends of said side members are bent outwardly and rearwardly forming resilient members 13 and which are so formed that. when the spring 8 is seated in its proper position within the casing 7 the said members 18 will abut the wall of the casing and will be suitably compressed thereby in order to increase the tension or gripping act-ion of the jaws 12 of the said side members 10 and 11.

14 designates a body of elastic material, such as cork, and which is of suitable size and shape in order to be inserted in the casing 5, and which body is cut away as at 15, in a suitable manner, around the same, in order to form a seat in which the spring 8 is seated, as best understood from Fig. 1, it being understood that the side members are suitably seated in the body 14, in order that the gripping jaws will meet, and that, when the elastic body 14 and spring are inserted in a casing, the side members 10 and 11 will suitably compress that portion of the cork which is seated therebetween.

16 designates a closure for the casing 5 which holds the parts in proper position.

The operation of the device will be readily apparent. The end 3 of the hat pin is inserted through the opening 7 and passing between the gripping jaws 12 will separate the same against the spring action of the side members 10 and 11, and also that of the resilient members 13, which, by the separation, are still further compressed between their respective members 10 and 11 and the side wall of the casing 5, the effect of which is to increase the tension or gripping action at the jaws 12 in order that the same will firmly and positively grip the pin and prevent accidental withdrawal of the same. At the same time the pointed end 3 of the hat pin will enter the elastic body or cork 14 which will further assist in holding the parts in position and act to prevent lateral movement of the protector with respect to the pin.

Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the principles of construction set forth, respectively, in the following claims are employed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening, a spring within said casing having converging side members forming gripping aws and spring arms between the wall of the casing and said side members having one end free for sliding engagement with one of said last two mentioned elements and exerting tension upon the side members at the ends of the gripping jaws for increasing the tension thereof.

2. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening, a spring within said casing having converging side walls and meeting at a suitable point in line with the opening, means between the wall of said casing and said side members for increasing the tension thereof, and a body of elastic material between said side members for receiving the pointed end of the hat pin.

3. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening, a spring within said casing having converging side members forming gripping jaws, the ends of said members being outwardly and rearwardly extending and abutting the wall of said casing to be compressed thereby, for increasing the gripping action of said jaws.

4. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening, an elastic member therein adapted to receive the pointed end of the hat pin, and a spring having converging side members on opposite sides of said elastic member, said side members forming gripping jaws and having their ends outwardly and rearwardly extending and abutting the walls of said casing where by the same are compressed to increase the gripping action of said jaws.

5. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening, an elastic member therein having a suitable seat, and a spring in said seat having converging side members on opposite sides of said elastic member, said side members forming gripping aws and having their ends outwardly and rearwardly extending and abutting the wall of said casing whereby the same are compressed to increase the gripping action of said jaws.
