SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,660, dated September 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN D. THEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in paper-files, the object thereof being to provide a paper or bill file with means for punching or perforating the papers to be filed, so that they can be held together; and it consists in the special construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper-file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.

A designates the base-board, upon which a metal base-plate B is secured, said base-plate having upwardly-projecting hollow pins 1) Z), which are cut away on one side so as to provide pointed ends. The base-plate at points opposite the pins 1) b is provided with lugs o c, the upper surface of each of which is grooved to form bearings for the cross-bar of a movable frame 0. This frame is made of a single piece of wire bent to provide the conmeeting-bar c, which connects the hooked members 0 to each other, The cross-bar is bent slightly upward and to one side and the upper surface thereof is shaped so as to provide angular edges. The curved portion of the cross-bar may be reduced in thickness to give the same a spring movement.

F designates a covering-plate, the end walls of which are recessed to fit over the lugs c and form upper bearings for the cross-bar of the movable frame 0, and in the rear of these recesses are formed outwardly-projecting lugs f, against which the movable frame will abut to limit its rearward movement. The horizontal spring portion of the movable frame bears against the top wall of the coveringplate,and by reason of the angular sides and spring of the same the hooked side members are held against the vertical pins 1) b. When the hooks are thrown back to put papers upon the pins, they will be returned to bear against the pins by the spring movement of the crossbar e. The cover-plate F is secured to the base-plate by screws, which may pass through the baseplate and into the board A when such a board is used. v

The device hereinbefore described is extremely simple, as it is composed of but few parts.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A paper-file having a base with upwardly-projecting pins and concave lugs carried thereby and a movable frame made of a single piece, the connecting portion of said frame being curved upwardly to provide a spring portion which abuts against the inner side of a covering-plate, so as to hold the movable frame in contact with the pins or rearwardly inclined, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a bill-file,the combination of the base B, having upwardly-projecting pins secured thereto, a covering plate or frame adapted to be secured to the base and provided with. end recesses through which the lower portion of the swinging frame passes, andinclined stops formed on the covering-plate, the swinging frame having a transverse portion which is bentout of line with its bearings and flattened, said central connecting portion being adapted to abut against the inner side of the covering-plate, substantially as shown,and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a bill-file, the combination of a swinging frame secured to a base B, having upwardly-projecting pins, and a covering-plate therefor having a flat inner side with which the connecting portion of the swinging frame engages, said connecting portion being bent out of line with the side bearings and provided with flattened portions,substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
