To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that we, HORACE MoCoRMIoK and MELVILLE A. LUMBAED, of Des Moines, Polk county, Iowa, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicate- Sale-Slip Files, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to files adapted to contain duplicate sale slips whereon a customers account and the daily balances appear, and the object of our invention is to provide an improvement in the construction of the le which will facilitate the handling of the same.

The invention consists generally in means` for holding the loose ends of the sale slips in place.

Further, the invention consists in providing improved means to aid in pulling the Jrile out of the cabinet or inserting it therein.

Further, the invention consists in a means for supporting a name or number plate.

Further, the invention consists in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a duplicate sale slip le embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. 4 is an edge view in detail illustrating the slip retaining device in its raised position. Figs. 5 and 6 are details showing the manner of mounting the spring pressed slip holding arms in the le. igs. 7 and 8 are detail sectional views of the same. Fig. 9 is a detail view of a modified construction.

In the drawing7 2 represents the back of the file, made preferably of sheet metal, although other material may beused if preferred, having one end turned upwardly to form a fiange 3 terminating in a bead 4. This flange is utilized as a holder for the name plate 5 and for a number plate 6 which corresponds to the number in the ledger opposite the customers name whose daily account is carried by the slips in the file. By the use of this number, the clerk will be able to readily locate the account in the ledger and refer from the file to the ledger or vice versa without the necessity of remembering the custoniers name which might be difficult to do, particularly where several accounts ol customers having the same name were c a ried on the books.

At the opposite end of the file a iiange 7 is formed at right angles substantially to the file and having an outwardly projecting horizontal part 8 terminating in a downwardly extending part 9 parallel substantially with the part 7. Loops 1() are formed in the hori-` zontal part 8 wherein a presser device A'is mounted. This device consists of a wire 11 having forwardly turned curved arms 12 that are adapted to bear on the upper ends of posts 13 whose lower ends are mounted in the plate 2, said plate being preferably countersunk as indicated in Fig. 3 so that the heads formed on the lower ends of the posts will be flush substantially with the bottom of the plate." A projection 14 isl preferably formed on the wire 11 by slightly bending or curving the same and a fiat spring 15 is mounted in part 8 below the wire 11 in position to bear on the same and hold the arms.

In Fig. 9 I have shown a slight modification which consists in providing a spring 17 mounted on the plate 2 or back of the file and having a curved end 18 projecting u wardly between the parts 7 and 9 of tFe flange and in the path of the curved portion of the presser device. The function of this spring is substantially the same as the spring 15 described. The posts 13, as is well known in this class of devices are adapted to slip through holes in the duplicate sale slip and the sli s are prevented from -becoming accidentalfy disengaged from the posts by means of the yielding arms.

For the purpose of holding the loose ends of the slips in place when the Jfile is taken out of the case and handled, we provide a bail 19 preferably of wire having ends 20 turned inwardly and mounted in bearings 21 formed by cutting and bending upwardly portions of thepart 9 on each side of the file, suitable the ends of the bail into its bearings. The

bail is U-sha ed in form and extends length wise of the file over the slips therein to its opposite end and is there provided with projections or shoulders 23 formed by bending the wire in position to engage the bead 4 at the top of the fiange 3 and snapping `by the same, hold the bail in place and prevent the loose ends of the slips from swinging out of the file. The escape of the loose ends of the slips is also prevented by providing loops 24 in the bail extending inwardlyover the middle portion of the file and these loops preferably terminate in an outwardly projecting finger piece 25 which extends beyond the flange w and is adapted to form a grip to facilitate the removal of the file from its case or its insertion therein. A label holder 26 is preferably mounted on the loops 24 and adapted to receive a number plate 27 correspondin to the number on the front of the file so tliat the clerk working on the books will not find it necessary to refer to the number on the front whenever it is desired to turn to that customers account in the ledger. Considerable time will be saved and the danger of making mistakes in the numbers and in the entries of the accounts will thereby be avoided.

Various modifications may be made in the details of construction of the file and the manner of mounting the bail and presser device therein and we do not therefore wish to be confined to the specific forms herein shown and described.

We claim as our invention l. The combination, with a duplicate sale slip file, of a bail mounted thereon at one end and extending thereover, said file having an upwardly turned part at one end, and said bail resting on said part and having a finger piece projecting beyond the same for convenience in withdrawing the file from its pocket.

2. The combination, with a duplicate'sale slip file comprising a plate having upwardly turned flanges at its ends and a bail having bearings in one of said Hanges and adapted to bear at its opposite end on the other flange, and said file having posts between which and said bail the sales slips are held,

the sides of said bail extending over and near the longitudinal edges of the slips when the device is in use.

3. A duplicate sale slip file having an upwardly turned flange at one end and a bail hinged at the opposite end of said file and adapted to overhang the duplicate sale slips and hold them in place on the file, said bail having projections arranged to engage and snap by the upper edge of said fiange, thereby locking said bail in place.

4. The combination, with a duplicate sale slip file7 of a bail hinged thereon at one end and extending thereover and adapted to hold the sale slips in place in the file, said file having a raised portion at one end and said bail having a loop formed therein and adapted to overhang said raised portion, for the purpose specified.

5. rlhe combination, with a duplicate sale slip iile, of a bail mounted thereon ,near one end and extending thereover to the opposite end and adapted to overhang the loose ends of the sale slips and said bail having inwardly projecting loops for the purpose specified.

6. The combination, with a duplicate sale slip file, of a bail mounted thereon at one end and extending thereover a name or number plate holder provided on said file and a similar holder provided on said bail, for the purpose specified.

7. The combination, with a sale slip file having an upwardly turned forward end and a number plate holder thereon, of a bail mounted on said file and adapted to overhang the papers therein, said bail having a shoulder or projection to engage the edge of said upwardly turned end and lock said bail against premature movement, and a number plate holder mounted on said bail at an angle to the plane of the holder on the file7 substantially as described.
