Description

J. C. SUNDBY.
TRAY.
APPLICATIDN man MAR. 15. 19m.
Patented 00t.22, 1918.
INVENTOR C. SUNDBY JOHN ATTORNEY JOHN. C. SUNIDIBY, OF ENDERLIN, NORTH DAKOTA.
TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed March 15, 1916. Serial No. 84,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SUNDBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enderlin, in the county of Ransom and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined tray, pencil sharpener and pointer and has for its principal object to provide a device of this character which will be ornamental in appearance and in which the pencil sharpener will be so associated with the tray that the shavings therefrom will fall within the tray.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pencil pointing means in the nature of a strip of sand paper or the like which is detachably mounted within the tray so that the same may be readily removed and a new strip substituted therefor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tray having a pencil pointing and sharpening means thereon, which will be so arranged with respect to the tray that the same may be readily used as a receptacle for various articles such as erasers, paper clips, or the. like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a top plan view of the tray;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Fig. .3 is a detail cross section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the tray in its entirety which comprises a bottom wall 2, and side walls 3. The side walls 3 are corrugated as shown to provide a novel, neat and attractive appearance. The side walls 3 extend upwardly and inwardly at an angle to the lower wall 2 so that when the tapered face of a pencil sharpener 4 is arranged thereagainst, the straight portion of the sharpener will be disposed vertical. This sharpener 4: is of the ordinary construction, wherein a pencil is inserted and twisted against a knife arranged interiorly of the sharpener for cutting the wood of the pencil Copies away from the lead thereof, and the usual opening in the tapered wall of the sharpener through which the shavings from the pencil pass, is adapted to be arranged in alinement with an opening 5 in the tapered side wall of the tray so that when the pencil is sharpened, the shavings therefrom will fall within the tray.
A plurality of incisions are formed in the lower wall 2 of the tray and the material of the lower wall within these incisions is bent up to form tongues 6, the said tongues in the present instance being four in number, oppositely disposed and arranged in alinement. Adapted to be inserted beneath these tongues 6 is a strip of abrasive material 7, such as sand paper, or the like upon which the point of a pencil is adapted to be rubbed to sharpen the same. By the provision of the tongues 6, it will be seen that the abrasive strip 7 when worn, may be readily re moved from engagement therewith and a new strip substituted.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation-of the improved tray will be clearly understood and while I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claim may import.
I claim A tray formed wholly of sheet metal having a flat bottom and an upstanding corrugated wall inwardly inclined both interiorly and exteriorly and of less diameter at the top than at the base, thus forming a receptacle with overhanging sides, a pencil sharpener extending vertically from said inclined wall and supported by said wall, the entrance end of said sharpener being directed upwardly and the outlet slot for the escape of shavings and chips being alined with a similar opening in the wall of the tray to discharge the chips, within the receptacle, and a strip of abrasive material secured to the bottom of the tray on the inner side.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OHN. C. SUNDBY. Witnesses PETER T. SUNDBY, MARTIN THORSON.
