SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,656, dated July 12, 1892.
Application filed December 15,1891- Serial No. 415,110- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDERS M. STRUSHOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodbridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Ti'es, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to improvements in tiles; and it oonsistsin the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings the figures represent myimproved tile and modifications thereof.
My invention is described as follows: The tile has cut in its back the grooves 1. The grooves are arranged parallel in sets, and the inner ends of one set are directly opposite the inner ends of the other set and are separated by the cross-web 2. Between the grooves, which run in parallel lines, is the solid part 3 of the tile, and on the outer sides of the grooves are the solid parts 4:, which run parallel to the part 3. The cross-webs 2 connect the parts 3 and 4 and are made integral therewith. Thus it will be seen that this tile is strengthened both ways, and at the same time it possesses all the virtues of the grooved tile. The front of the tile may be plane or decorated with any suitable figures, and the back of the tile may be provided with any number of grooves, the grooves having outlets in but two opposite edges of the tile.
In Figure 1 I show a tile which has the sides of its grooves beveled, while in Fig. 2 I show a tile which has grooves with sides part perpendicular and part beveled. This construction does away. with all sharp angles and the edges of the grooves are not apt to chip otf. In Fig. 3 I show a tile made as above described and having the parts 3 and 4 dug out, so as to make the tile light, and at the same time the raised edges around these parts will add strength and brace the tile in all directions.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Atile provided with a plurality of grooves in its under surface, said grooves commencin g at opposite edges thereof and terminating at such a distance therefrom as to leave a web between their approximate ends, the said grooves having beveled sides, substantially as set forth.
2. A tile provided with a plurality of grooves in its under surface, said grooves commencing at opposite edges thereof and terminating at such a distance therefrom as to leave a web Witnesses:
