UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HYDE EMERY, F DES MOINES, IOWA, ASSIGNOB TO THE DES MOINES CLAY A MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DES MOINES, IOWA, A CORPORATION OF IOWA.
BRICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 6, 1911.
Patented May 28,1912.
Serial No. 619,240.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE HYDE EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Brick, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of a brick so designed as to have planes of least resistance, so that the brick will break evenly when struck at points on those lines.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of brick constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 shows a modified form of brick.
Referring to Fig. l, the brick 10 is provided with cut-away portions in the shape of polygonal openings 11. The planes of least resistance of a brick thus constructed will pass through the points 12 and 13, in one direction, and through the points 14 in the direction of the length of the brick.
These planes are indicated in Fig. 1 by the dotted rectangles a, b, and 0. By striking the brick with an edged tool at points in any one of those planes the brick will break evenly in that plane.
The shape and location of the openings in the brick may be varied in accordance with the particular location of the planes of least resistance. In Fig. 2 the openings 11 are four-sided and the planes of least resistance I indicated by the dotted rectangles a, b and 0 pass through the points 12, 18 and 14 Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
' 1. As a new article 'of manufacture, a
brick rectangular in outline and having a plurality of polygonal openings symmetrically disposed therein, said openings forming three planes of least resistance through the brick, one of said planes passing through the center of said brick from end to end. I
2. As a new article of manufacture a brick of rectangular outline having a polygonal opening therein near one end of the brick, said opening having one of its corners near the end of the brick at the center, said opening having other corners lying in a plane transverse to said brick and forming a transverse plane of least resistance so that the brick will break when struck opposite said corners. V V
3. As a new article of manufacture, a brick having a plurality of polygonal openings designed to provide three planes of Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. C.
